New National Transport Pass Unveiled
The Spanish government has announced the upcoming launch of a national public transport pass, designed to offer unlimited travel across a significant portion of the country's public transport network. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled the initiative on Monday, December 15, 2025, stating it would 'change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport for ever'. The pass is slated to come into effect in the second half of January 2026, with some reports specifying January 19, 2026, as the launch date.
The new pass will cost €60 per month for adults, while individuals under the age of 26 will benefit from a reduced fare of €30 per month. This measure is intended to ease the financial burden on commuters amidst rising living costs and to encourage a shift towards more sustainable transportation methods.
Coverage and Exclusions
The national public transport pass will grant users unlimited access to a range of state-run services. These include:
- Cercanías (commuter rail)
- Media Distancia (middle-distance regional rail)
- Avant services
- National bus services and state-run intercity buses
However, certain transport options will initially be excluded from the scheme. High-speed rail services, such as AVE, and other long-distance rail routes will not be covered. Additionally, urban metros, trams, and local bus services, which fall under the jurisdiction of regional and municipal authorities, are not included in the initial rollout. The government has expressed its hope that these local authorities will eventually join the initiative to create a more integrated national system.
Objectives and Expected Impact
The Spanish government projects that approximately 2 million people could benefit from this new pass, with some commuters potentially saving up to 60% on their monthly travel expenses. Transport Minister Óscar Puente provided further operational details, emphasizing the government's commitment to improving the daily lives of Spaniards and fostering sustainable mobility.
This initiative follows similar schemes implemented in other European countries, such as Germany's 'Deutschlandticket'. The Spanish government also confirmed that existing public transport discounts will remain in place throughout 2026, complementing the new national pass.

Love this! Unlimited travel for €60 is an absolute bargain.

It's positive to see Spain investing in public transport and making it more accessible with the €60 pass. Yet, without comprehensive coverage of all regional and municipal services, its true 'national' impact feels incomplete.

Yes, without comprehensive coverage of all regional and municipal services, its true impact feels incomplete.

The government's goal to save commuters money and boost sustainable mobility is admirable with this new pass. However, the success will largely depend on how many regional authorities integrate their services, otherwise, it's just a partial solution.

Another half-baked plan. What about the people who rely on local transport daily?

Fantastic news! This will save so much money and help the environment.

This will just cause more overcrowding on the included services. Not well thought out.

So, no high-speed rail? This isn't truly 'national' then, is it?
