New Appointment in Norwegian Ministry of Defence
Mr. Mathias Solli has officially been appointed as the new political adviser to Norway's Minister of Defence, Mr. Tore O. Sandvik. The appointment was announced on December 16, 2025, by the Office of the Prime Minister. Solli assumes the role previously held by Sandra Kalland Tenud, who departed in the autumn of this year.
Mathias Solli's Background and Experience
At 25 years old, Mathias Solli brings a dynamic background to his new position. He previously served as a communications adviser for the Labour Party (Arbeiderpartiet) within the Trøndelag county council. Solli is also the leader of the Indre Fosen Labour Party and has held various trusted positions within the Labour Party and its youth wing, AUF. He is currently pursuing studies in political science and law at NTNU and UiT.
Minister Sandvik expressed confidence in Solli's capabilities, stating that his experience in youth politics, election campaign work, and local politics at both municipal and county levels makes him well-suited for the responsibilities of the role. Solli himself acknowledged the significant learning curve ahead and expressed his commitment to the Ministry's work in strengthening Norway's defense capabilities and supporting Ukraine.
Minister Tore O. Sandvik's Leadership
Tore O. Sandvik, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has served as Norway's Minister of Defence since his appointment on February 4, 2025. Prior to his current ministerial role, Sandvik held significant leadership positions in local government, including serving as the Chairman of the County Council for Sør-Trøndelag from 2003 to 2018, and subsequently for the merged Trøndelag county from 2018 to 2023. His career also includes terms as State Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2001 and again in November 2023.
The Role of a Political Adviser
In the Norwegian governmental structure, political advisers are integral members of the political staff within the various Ministries. They are appointed by the Office of the Prime Minister and their tenure is typically linked to changes in government. Their primary function is to provide direct support to the Minister, which can involve a range of duties such as:
- Monitoring and reporting on political developments
- Preparing written materials, including background notes, speaking points, and speeches
- Building and maintaining networks with relevant stakeholders
- Assisting with administrative tasks and the planning of ministerial activities
This role is distinct from that of a 'special adviser' (spesialrådgiver), who are high-ranking civil servants and permanent employees, whereas political advisers are political appointees.

Solli's commitment to strengthening Norway's defense is admirable, yet I wonder if a deeper understanding of military operations is needed for a role supporting the Defence Minister.

While youth brings new ideas and energy, I hope his lack of direct defense experience won't hinder crucial decision-making during these tense geopolitical times.

Minister Sandvik clearly knows how to pick sharp minds. Great for Norway's security.

Just shuffling party members around. No real focus on strategic defense needs.
