Annual Duty Visit Concludes in Beijing
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu undertook his annual duty visit to Beijing from December 11 to 14, 2024. The visit culminated in a significant meeting with President Xi Jinping on December 13, 2024, at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound. During the meeting, Chief Executive Lee provided a comprehensive report on Hong Kong's latest economic, social, and political situation, as well as the ongoing work of the HKSAR government. Premier Li Qiang was also present at a meeting with Lee during his visit.
President Xi Commends HKSAR Government's Efforts
President Xi Jinping 'fully affirmed' the work carried out by Chief Executive John Lee and the HKSAR government over the past year. Xi praised Lee for 'shouldering responsibilities and delivering concrete results'. Among the key achievements highlighted by President Xi were:
- The 'historic completion' of the legislative work under Article 23 of the Basic Law.
- Dedicated efforts in boosting economic development.
- Addressing critical livelihood problems, including housing and healthcare.
- Strengthening external exchanges and cooperation.
- Continuously enhancing Hong Kong's international prestige.
Commitment to 'One Country, Two Systems' and Future Development
During the meeting, President Xi Jinping reiterated Beijing's unwavering commitment to the 'full, firm and accurate implementation' of the 'one country, two systems' policy. He encouraged Chief Executive Lee and the HKSAR government to 'unite and lead all sectors of society in actively pursuing reform and progress, and in pursuing prosperity through innovation and creativity'. Xi also noted that Hong Kong is currently facing 'new historic opportunities' for development. Following the meeting, Chief Executive Lee emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and creating synergy for economic growth. He highlighted Hong Kong's improved global standing, including its recognition as the world's third-ranking financial center and fifth in international competitiveness. Lee also outlined strategies to address fiscal challenges, achieve a balanced budget, and expand trade relations with key regions such as ASEAN, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America.
