New Social Services Hub for Copceac Community
The Multifunctional Social Services Center in Copceac, located in the autonomous territory of Gagauzia, Moldova, has officially opened its doors to local beneficiaries. The announcement was made by the EU Delegation to Moldova on December 12, 2025, marking a significant step in enhancing social support for the community. The center's renovation and modernization were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Renovation and Funding Details
The extensive renovation of the center was supported by the 'Mayors for Economic Growth' (M4EG) initiative, a joint program funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP. Copceac received a grant of over €86,000, which was strategically invested in upgrading the facility. The modernization efforts included comprehensive thermal insulation of the walls and the installation of a biomass boiler, significantly improving the building's energy efficiency and comfort.
Services and Beneficiaries
The newly renovated center is equipped to provide a range of essential social services to the most vulnerable members of the community. Key facilities that have been upgraded include:
- A social canteen with a capacity to serve approximately 100 people daily.
- A social laundry.
- A dedicated space for the collection and distribution of donated goods.
Official Statements and Broader Impact
Officials have highlighted the importance of this initiative for the region. Oleg Garizan, Mayor of Copceac, stated, 'In partnership with the EU and UNDP, we are creating high-quality social services for our residents. This is the most important contribution to improving people's quality of life and protecting those who are most in need of support.' Anton Anghelcev, Director of the Multifunctional Social Services Center in Copceac, added, 'The implementation of this project is our responsibility to the older generation. Helping those who need support and assistance is the most valuable vocation in society.'
Beyond infrastructure improvements, local authorities in Copceac also benefited from training provided through the M4EG network, aimed at strengthening their capacities in social services and developing skills for effective economic planning. Additionally, the center has been furnished with necessary technical equipment and furniture through a separate project funded by the Government of Switzerland and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Moldova.

It's encouraging to see international partners support local communities in Moldova. However, the true measure of success will be the long-term sustainability and scalability of such initiatives across the nation.

This project highlights vital collaboration and direct community benefit. Still, one must question if such localized interventions can truly shift the needle on broader societal challenges without comprehensive national strategies.

What about other villages? This feels like a token gesture for a specific area.

Another foreign-funded project. When will Moldova stand on its own feet?
