New Connectivity Era for Abra Group Airlines
SES, a leading communications satellite operator headquartered in Luxembourg, and Abra Group, a prominent Latin American air transportation holding, have officially launched a new multi-orbit inflight connectivity service. The announcement, made on December 15, 2025, marks a significant step in providing advanced broadband internet access to passengers across the Americas.
The service is initially operational on 10 Airbus A320s belonging to Avianca, one of Abra Group's member airlines. Plans are in place for the connectivity solution to be progressively installed on more than 100 Airbus and Boeing aircraft within the Abra Group fleet in the coming years.
Advanced Multi-Orbit Technology
The new inflight connectivity leverages SES's innovative technology, featuring a new electronically steered array (ESA) antenna. This antenna, which is less than seven centimeters tall, is designed to deliver 'unmatched reliability' by connecting to both SES's family of geostationary (GEO) satellites and its partner's constellation of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. SES operates over 70 satellites in both geostationary and medium Earth orbits (MEO), providing extensive global coverage.
This multi-orbit approach aims to ensure 'consistent reliable' and 'fast and dependable internet access' for passengers, mirroring the quality of internet service they experience at home, regardless of their flight path or location.
Strengthening Presence in the Americas
The partnership solidifies SES's position as a leading provider of satellite-powered broadband inflight services in the Americas. Enrique Villasenor, SES Vice President of Global Airline Partnerships, stated, 'Abra Group's commitment to passenger experience will now include consistent reliable, multi-orbit satellite connectivity on its Airbus and Boeing fleet that provides the same fast and dependable internet access passengers enjoy at home no matter where or when they fly.' He added that 'SES' partnerships with growing Abra Group airlines like Avianca, GOL and Wamos Air highlight how carriers throughout the Americas are leading the way when it comes to advanced connectivity. SES is the engine that powers inflight connectivity, a trusted partner that makes airline operations easier.'
Abra Group comprises a pan-Latin American network of airlines, including Avianca, GOL, and Wamos Air, with a strategic investment in Sky Airline. Francisco Raddatz, Chief Procurement Officer of Abra Group, commented, 'At Abra Group, we continue to bring next-generation solutions onboard to make connectivity more accessible and offer more options to our passengers.'

It's great they're investing in better connectivity, but I hope the pricing structure makes it accessible for everyone, not just business class.
