China and Saudi Arabia Vow Enhanced Coordination on Global and Regional Issues

High-Level Meetings Cement Bilateral Ties

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – China and Saudi Arabia have agreed to significantly enhance coordination on a range of regional and global issues, following high-level meetings held in Riyadh on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in discussions with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, underscoring the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, which was part of Wang Yi's three-nation Middle East tour, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors. China reiterated its stance that Saudi Arabia is a 'priority for Middle East diplomacy' and a crucial partner in its global diplomatic strategy.

Expanded Cooperation Across Key Sectors

The discussions encompassed a broad spectrum of cooperation areas, aiming to foster mutual benefit and development. Key sectors identified for enhanced collaboration include:

  • Energy and Economy: Deepening traditional energy cooperation, expanding into new energy, and boosting trade and investment.
  • Technology: Strengthening partnerships in artificial intelligence and high technology.
  • Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges: Promoting exchanges in culture, tourism, education, think tanks, and media.
  • Strategic Alignment: Aligning China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.

A significant outcome of the meetings was the signing of an agreement for mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic, service, and special passports, aimed at facilitating cross-border travel and exchanges.

Coordination on Regional and Global Stability

Both China and Saudi Arabia emphasized the importance of closer communication and coordination on regional and international affairs. China lauded Riyadh's leading role and efforts in promoting regional and international security and stability.

The two countries reiterated their support for a 'comprehensive and just settlement' to the Palestinian question, advocating for the formation of an independent Palestinian state.

Furthermore, China expressed its appreciation for Saudi Arabia's efforts in developing and enhancing relations with Iran, following China's successful mediation of the Iran-Saudi detente in 2023. Saudi Arabia, in turn, reaffirmed its adherence to the one-China principle.

Future Outlook and Multilateral Engagement

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia expressed support for China's initiative to host the second China-Arab States Summit and the second China-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in 2026. Efforts are also underway to expedite the conclusion of the China-GCC Free Trade Agreement.

The year 2026 will mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Saudi Arabia, with both nations committed to elevating their ties to new heights.

While closer ties between China and Saudi Arabia could bring economic benefits and regional stability, it's also a significant shift in global power dynamics that warrants close observation, especially regarding human rights.

Aligning Vision 2030 with the BRI offers huge infrastructure and development potential for Saudi Arabia. However, the long-term economic and political dependencies created by such deep integration with China need careful consideration.

Worrying implications for global security. US influence is waning, and not for the better.

Another step towards authoritarian dominance. This alliance is a threat to democratic values.
