DSS Acknowledges Threat, Initiates Preventive Measures
The Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria has officially acknowledged receiving intelligence regarding potential attacks planned for Christmas Day across various communities in the country. Senior DSS officials in Abuja confirmed their awareness of the reported plots and stated that comprehensive preventive operations have been launched nationwide. An unnamed DSS officer was quoted saying, 'The service is aware; we have the intelligence report and we are already working on it.' This confirmation comes amidst heightened security concerns as the festive season approaches.
Origin of the Alert and Targeted Regions
The initial alarm was raised by Equipping The Persecuted, a United States-based humanitarian organization. The group presented its findings during a roundtable meeting held in Washington D.C., convened by the International Committee on Nigeria and the African Jewish Alliance. According to Judd Saul, the founder of the organization, armed groups, potentially with links to Al Shabab and ISWAP, are reportedly regrouping to carry out these attacks.
The intelligence specifically points to communities in Nigeria's Middle Belt region as potential targets. Areas mentioned include:
- Plateau State (specifically Riyom and Bokkos)
- Southern Kaduna
- Benue State (specifically Agatu)
- Nasarawa State (border communities)
Presidency's Stance and Call for Calm
In response to the alert, the Bola Tinubu Presidency has expressed reservations, questioning the motives behind the report and cautioning that such information could unnecessarily escalate fear and insecurity among the populace. Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, advised Nigerians to approach unverified reports with caution. Despite the Presidency's stance, the DSS has affirmed its commitment to proactive security measures to ensure a peaceful Christmas period for all citizens.

A foreign group stirring panic? Don't trust this 'intelligence' at all.

More talk, less action. This won't stop anything, just creates anxiety.

The Presidency downplaying real threats is dangerous. They live in denial.

Better safe than sorry. The DSS is doing its job by acting on intelligence.
