Russian Reinforcements Bolster Offensive in Donetsk Oblast

Russian forces have deployed additional reserves to the Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad sectors in Donetsk Oblast, significantly intensifying pressure on Ukrainian troops. This development was confirmed by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on December 13, 2025, following his visit to Ukrainian positions in the area. Syrskyi described the situation as 'difficult' and 'challenging,' noting that the enemy is attempting to increase pressure on Ukrainian defensive positions by moving in these additional reserves.

Escalating Russian Offensive Operations

The deployment of fresh reserves underscores Russia's continued efforts to advance in the region, which has been a primary target for months. Russian forces are reportedly trying to encircle Pokrovsk from multiple directions and are pushing to sever the land corridor connecting Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk. Reports indicate that Russia has amassed a substantial force, with over 155,000 troops deployed on the Pokrovsk axis, representing approximately 20% of its total invasion force. This sector also sees a high concentration of Russian aerial bombardments, with 40-50% of all Russian aerial bombs dropped on the front being utilized here. The 76th Pskov Air Assault Division has reportedly been deployed to the Pokrovsk area.

Ukrainian Defense and Recent Gains

Despite the intensified pressure, Ukrainian troops are employing 'active defense tactics,' aiming to improve their operational positions and dislodge Russian forces from certain areas. Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi outlined specific measures to strengthen defenses, including ensuring the stable operation of key logistics routes, enhancing the effectiveness of firepower, and improving coordination between units. Ukrainian forces have reported some successes, having regained control of approximately 16 square kilometers in the northern part of Pokrovsk over the past several weeks. As of mid-November, Ukrainian forces held the northern part of the city, roughly along the railway line, and had cleared and controlled about 54 square kilometers west of Pokrovsk.

Strategic Importance of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad

Pokrovsk is considered a key fortress city and a critical logistics hub in Donetsk Oblast, making its control strategically vital for both sides. Myrnohrad, a satellite town located less than 3 kilometers from Pokrovsk, is also a focal point of the ongoing hostilities. While Russian claims of encircling Pokrovsk have been countered by Ukrainian officials, the situation around Myrnohrad remains complex, with reports suggesting that all usable routes into and out of the city are under constant Russian fire, creating a perilous 'gray zone' corridor for supplies and personnel rotation. The Pokrovsk offensive has been an ongoing military operation since July 2024, with the primary goal for Russian forces being the capture of Pokrovsk.
