Diplomatic Presence Restored in Eastern Slovakia
The Consulate General of Ukraine in Prešov, Slovakia, officially resumed operations on Friday, December 5, 2025, marking the end of an 11-year hiatus. The grand reopening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and Juraj Blanár, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.
The consulate, which ceased its activities in November 2014, is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing support for the significant Ukrainian population residing in eastern Slovakia and fostering stronger bilateral relations between the two nations.
Addressing the Needs of the Ukrainian Community
The primary objective behind the reopening is to provide essential consular services and support to the estimated 40,000 Ukrainian citizens living in the Košice and Prešov self-governing regions. Beyond consular assistance, the diplomatic mission aims to promote trade, investments, and cultural diplomacy. Special attention will be given to preserving Ukrainian identity and strengthening the ties between the Ukrainian and Slovak communities.
During the ceremony, a memorial plaque dedicated to Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda was also unveiled, and plans for a Ukrainian Saturday school in Prešov were announced, further underscoring the cultural and educational aspects of the consulate's mission.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the importance of the reopening, stating that it 'opens new prospects for the development of relations between Ukraine and Slovakia and allows for more effective care of the Ukrainian community in this country.' He also expressed gratitude to the Slovak government for its unwavering support, including its participation in the coalition for civilian shelters and the provision of energy equipment, such as 37 generators delivered to Sumy.
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár highlighted Slovakia's commitment to assisting Ukraine, noting that nearly 2 million Ukrainians have transited through Slovakia since the onset of Russia's full-scale aggression, with approximately 160,000 to 170,000 Ukrainians currently residing in the country. Blanár reiterated Slovakia's readiness to provide necessary assistance and expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
