Norway Bolsters Military Transport with Major Rheinmetall Truck Order

Strategic Procurement to Enhance Capabilities

Norway has placed a substantial order for almost 300 TG3 MIL 8x8 military trucks from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV), a joint venture between Rheinmetall and MAN Truck & Bus. The contract, valued at over €150 million, was officially signed on May 31, 2023, in Oslo. This acquisition is a strategic move to significantly bolster the Norwegian military's transport capacity and overall operational capabilities.

The agreement was formalized by Gro Jeare, Director of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA), and Michael Wittlinger, Chairman of the Management Board of RMMV. Deliveries of these advanced military trucks are slated to begin in late 2026 and are expected to continue into 2027.

Details of the Order and Vehicle Specifications

The comprehensive order includes a variety of vehicle variants designed to meet diverse logistical needs of the Norwegian Armed Forces. These include:

  • Hook loader trucks
  • Special vehicles with cranes
  • Hook loader systems
  • Trailers and flatracks

Additionally, a smaller number of hooklift trucks are specifically designated for integration with the NASAMS mobile air defense system.

The TG3 MIL 8x8 trucks are based on MAN's commercial chassis, militarized to withstand demanding defense operations. They feature a reinforced cabin structure, advanced driving assistance systems, and are adaptable for various mission-specific equipment.

Part of a Broader Framework and NATO Interoperability

This procurement represents the largest single call-off of trucks to date under a long-standing framework contract that Rheinmetall holds with Norway and Sweden. The roots of this successful Scandinavian logistic truck project trace back to 2008, with the framework agreement itself signed in 2014.

Michael Wittlinger of RMMV emphasized the significance of the order, stating, 'We see this follow-up order as clear proof of the professional and partner-like cooperation in recent years as well as the compelling performance of our products.' He further added that the increasing adoption of their TG and HX vehicles by NATO armed forces is a crucial step towards greater interoperability and resilience within the alliance.

Norway's Increased Defense Spending

The acquisition aligns with Norway's broader commitment to significantly increase its defense spending. The nation aims to reach 2% of its GDP on defense in 2024 and has proposed a substantial boost to its defense budget over the next 12 years. This long-term plan includes considerable investments across various military capabilities, underscoring Norway's dedication to strengthening its national and allied security.

Investing in advanced military equipment can deter potential threats, which is positive. But we must also ensure that such procurements align with a clear defensive strategy and don't inadvertently contribute to an arms race mentality.

€150 million on trucks? What about healthcare or education funds?

While increased defense spending is understandable given the current global climate, it's important to question if this specific purchase is the most efficient use of such a large budget, or if other defense areas are more critical.

Wasteful spending when there are so many other urgent domestic needs.
