Strategic Importance for Air France and Tourism
This new direct route marks Phuket as Air France's second destination in Thailand, complementing its existing service to Bangkok. The airline stated that the expansion aims to meet the growing demand for travel to Asia and enhance connectivity between Thailand and Europe. Femke Kroese, General Manager for South East Asia & Oceania at Air France, emphasized that introducing Phuket offers an 'exciting opportunity to enhance Air France and KLM's connectivity in the region'.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has welcomed the new service, recognizing its potential to strengthen long-haul access and support high-value tourism growth from the French market. French Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Jean-Claude Poimboeuf, was among the dignitaries present at the welcome ceremony in Phuket, underscoring the diplomatic and economic significance of the new connection. Thailand recorded 727,578 French visitors between January 1 and November 30, 2025, representing a 13.51% increase year-on-year.
Phuket: A Gateway to Thai Tourism
Phuket, Thailand's largest island, is renowned for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant cultural experiences, making it a prime destination for relaxation and adventure. The direct flights are expected to facilitate easier access for European travelers, further boosting the island's appeal as a gateway to Southern Thailand's diverse offerings, including luxury resorts, wellness experiences, and yachting activities.

Direct flights are certainly a boon for travelers and the airline, yet the long-term environmental consequences of increased air travel need to be seriously addressed and mitigated.

More mass tourism, exactly what Phuket doesn't need. Overcrowding alert.

It's good to see demand for travel to Asia being met, potentially benefiting local businesses. However, authorities should ensure that this growth doesn't lead to over-commercialization and loss of authenticity.
