Aerolíneas Argentinas Unveils Self-Funded Fleet Modernization
Aerolíneas Argentinas, the state-owned flag carrier of Argentina, has announced a significant fleet expansion plan, incorporating 18 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. Deliveries for these new additions are scheduled to commence in 2026 and continue through 2029. This initiative represents the airline's first self-financed investment plan, signaling a notable shift in its financial management.
The investment, exceeding US$65 million, will cover not only the new aircraft but also cabin upgrades and enhanced connectivity across the fleet. Fabián Lombardo, CEO of Aerolíneas Argentinas, stated that this milestone confirms the company's transformation into 'a company with investment capacity and projection using its own resources'.
New Aircraft Models and Delivery Schedule
The fleet expansion will introduce a mix of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft to enhance both long-haul and regional operations. The order includes:
- Four Airbus A330neo aircraft, intended for long-haul routes.
- Fourteen Boeing 737 MAX jets, comprising:
- Two Boeing 737 MAX 8s
- Four Boeing 737 MAX 9s
- Eight Boeing 737 MAX 10s
The first new aircraft, specifically two Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets, are expected to arrive in 2026, with the remaining deliveries phased in between 2027 and 2029. These aircraft will be integrated into the fleet through operating lease agreements, a strategy designed to provide flexibility and avoid heavy capital expenditure.
Financial Independence and Strategic Vision
This fleet renewal plan underscores a significant financial turnaround for Aerolíneas Argentinas. The airline reported a positive Operating Result (EBIT) of US$56.6 million in 2024, marking an end to a 15-year period of deficits that averaged US$400 million annually between 2008 and 2023. The company projects to double this operating result in 2025, which will be the first year since its renationalization in 2008 that it will not require funding from the National Treasury.
The strategic goals behind this expansion include lowering Unit Costs (CASK), improving revenue potential, and enhancing the overall passenger experience. The airline also plans to install Wi-Fi connectivity across its entire fleet, beginning with the A330s in 2027, followed by the 737 and Embraer fleets.
Current Fleet and Future Outlook
As of late 2025, Aerolíneas Argentinas operates a fleet of 83 aircraft. This includes 10 Airbus A330-200s, 15 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, 28 Boeing 737-800s, 4 Boeing 737-700s, 24 Embraer E190s, and 2 Boeing 737-800BCF freighters. The introduction of the A330neo is considered a natural progression, offering commonality with the existing A330ceo fleet in terms of spare parts, simulators, and technical training, while also providing improved fuel efficiency and range.
Despite previous governmental intentions under President Javier Milei's administration to privatize Aerolíneas Argentinas, the initiative did not secure the necessary congressional approval. The airline continues to serve 37 domestic destinations and 22 international routes across Latin America, the United States, and Europe.

Privatization was the right path. This just delays the inevitable, more taxpayer money eventually.

Operating leases aren't 'self-funded investment.' It's just more debt with a different name.

Still a state-owned airline, still skeptical. The past deficits were astronomical.

They've been unprofitable for so long, this 'turnaround' feels temporary. Wait and see.
