Historic Opening at Charles Nicolle Hospital
Tunisia has officially inaugurated its first robotic surgery center, located at the Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis. The opening ceremony, held on November 11, 2025, marks a significant advancement for the nation's healthcare sector and signals a new era for robotic surgery in North Africa.
The event was attended by several key dignitaries, including Tunisia's Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, the South Korean Ambassador to Tunisia, Lee Tae-won, and the CEO of meerecompany, Joon Koo Kim.
Pioneering Robotic Procedure Performed
Coinciding with the center's launch, the first robotic surgery in Tunisia was successfully performed. Dr. Ramzi Nouira, Head of Surgery and Director of the new Robotic Surgery Center, led the landmark operation. The procedure involved a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) on a 38-year-old female patient, who recovered without complications. This successful operation, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, underscored the readiness of Tunisian medical professionals to adopt sophisticated surgical techniques.
Advanced 'Revo-i' Technology and International Collaboration
The new center is equipped with the state-of-the-art Revo-i surgical robot system, developed by South Korean firm meerecompany. The acquisition of this cutting-edge technology was facilitated through a bilateral cooperation agreement between Tunisia and South Korea. As part of this collaboration, Tunisian medical teams, including Dr. Nouira, underwent specialized training at meerecompany's headquarters in South Korea to ensure optimal outcomes.
The Revo-i system offers significant advantages over traditional surgery, including:
- Enhanced surgical accuracy
- Complete movement control
- 3D magnified vision
- Reduced bleeding and postoperative complications
- Shorter hospital stays and faster patient recovery times
Vision for Regional Medical Leadership
The establishment of this center is poised to transform healthcare practices in Tunisia and the wider North African region. Minister Ferjani stated, 'The opening of this robotic surgery center marks a significant advancement for Tunisia's healthcare system.' He articulated the goal of positioning Tunisia as a regional hub for robotic surgery and smart medicine. Ambassador Lee Tae-won reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to supporting Tunisia in health technology and medical development, highlighting the partnership as a 'meaningful milestone for K-medical as it expands into the North African market.'
