President Sulyok Declares Africa's Stability a Strategic Priority for Europe at EU-AU Summit

President Sulyok Addresses EU-AU Summit in Angola

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok recently underscored the critical importance of Africa's stability for Europe's future during his address at the EU-African Union (EU-AU) Summit in Luanda, Angola. The President's participation marked the first time in 15 years that a Hungarian head of state attended the summit, which took place on November 24-25, 2025.

Key Pillars of Stability and Cooperation

In his remarks, President Sulyok articulated that 'conflict prevention is more effective than crisis management' when dealing with challenges on the African continent. He stressed the necessity for Europe to actively support efforts aimed at resolving armed conflicts, establishing and maintaining peace, and enhancing the overall security situation in Africa. A central theme of his speech was the need to address the fundamental causes of instability, illegal migration, and terrorism. This includes a focus on:

  • Supporting young people
  • Encouraging job creation
  • Promoting education and skills development

President Sulyok reiterated Hungary's belief in providing support to enable individuals to 'thrive in their homeland'.

Hungary's Contributions to African Development

Hungary is actively involved in various programs across Africa designed to foster stability and development. A notable initiative cited by President Sulyok is the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program, launched in 2015. Over the past decade, this program has enabled more than 6,500 African students to pursue higher education in Hungary. The Hungarian government operates numerous development programs in Africa, with a particular emphasis on strengthening the role of youth through educational opportunities and entrepreneurial promotion.

Strengthening EU-Africa Relations

President Sulyok also expressed Hungary's strong support for initiatives that aim to deepen cooperation between the European Union and its African partners. He highlighted the existing robust relationship, noting that the EU currently stands as Africa's largest economic and trading partner, one of its most significant investors, and its primary donor. The EU-AU Summit serves as a crucial platform for maintaining a regular and continuous dialogue on key issues and challenges affecting both continents within the framework of their strategic partnership.

It's true that Africa's stability impacts Europe, and cooperation is important. Yet, the framing often overlooks African agency and leadership in solving its own challenges, sometimes feeling more like a European mandate.

Acknowledging the EU as a major partner is accurate, and investment is needed. However, these partnerships must evolve to be truly equitable, addressing historical imbalances rather than perpetuating dependency.

Scholarships are nice, but they won't stop the real migration flows.

Stronger EU-Africa ties benefit everyone. This summit sounds very promising.
