Moderate Earthquake Recorded in Western Thessaly
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck western Thessaly, Greece, on Monday, November 24, 2025, at 10:51 AM local time (GMT +2). The seismic event was widely felt across the region, but initial reports indicate no damage or injuries.
Epicenter and Depth Details
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the area of the Plastiras dam in the province of Karditsa. According to the Greek Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens, the tremor originated at an estimated depth of 10 kilometers. Public broadcaster ERT was among the first to report the event. The epicenter was approximately 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Karditsa.
No Damage or Casualties Reported
Despite being felt across a significant portion of Thessaly, officials have confirmed that the earthquake did not cause any structural damage or injuries. Panagiotis Nanos, the Mayor of the Municipality of Lake Plastiras, stated that no damage was reported in his jurisdiction. The shallow depth of the quake contributed to its widespread perception, even reaching as far as Athens, where it was felt as very weak shaking.
Greece's Seismic Activity
Greece is situated in a highly seismically active region, lying at the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the country, and building codes are designed to withstand significant seismic activity. This latest tremor, while noticeable, falls within the typical range of moderate seismic events experienced in the area.

It's reassuring that there was no damage reported, which speaks to strong building codes. However, it's still a stark reminder of Greece's constant seismic risk and the need for vigilance.
