The much-anticipated Divya Kala Mela was inaugurated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on November 16, 2025, at Lucknow University. The nine-day event, which commenced on November 15 and will run until November 23, 2025, aims to showcase the diverse products and artistic talents of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from across India. A Platform for Empowerment and Skill Display
Organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, with the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) serving as the nodal agency, the Mela provides a crucial platform for economic empowerment. Approximately 100 Divyang artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from around 18 States and Union Territories are participating, exhibiting their skills and products.
The event is designed to foster self-reliance and promote the 'Vocal for Local' initiative by creating marketing avenues for these talented individuals. Visitors can explore a wide array of items, including:
- Handicrafts and handloom products
- Embroidery work
- Packaged and organic food items
- Home decor and lifestyle products
- Apparel and stationery
- Eco-friendly goods
- Toys, gift items, jewelry, and clutch bags
Cultural Extravaganza and Community Engagement
Beyond the exhibition and sale of products, the Divya Kala Mela features a series of cultural activities, including performances by Divyang artists and other renowned professionals. A special cultural program titled 'Divya Kala Shakti' is scheduled for November 23, highlighting the theme 'Ability in Disability'. The Mela also offers a culinary journey with food stalls presenting delicacies from various regions of the country.
This initiative not only boosts the confidence of persons with disabilities but also contributes significantly to sensitizing visitors towards disability through experience zones, Divyang sports activities, and art exhibitions. Previous editions of the Divya Kala Mela have collectively generated over ₹21 crore in business for Divyang artisans from 24 states, underscoring the event's substantial impact on their economic independence.

The cultural programs and sensitization efforts are important for changing perceptions. Yet, true societal change requires ongoing education and accessibility improvements, not just a temporary, localized event.

The Mela provides valuable exposure and income for participants, which is great. However, we must also address systemic barriers that prevent full inclusion in mainstream employment and entrepreneurship.
