Festive Season Begins in Sofia
The highly anticipated traditional German Christmas Market (Deutscher Weihnachtsmarkt Sofia) is scheduled to commence its 2025 season on November 14 in Sofia's picturesque City Garden. Located directly in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the market is a cherished annual event, marking its 15th anniversary this year. It will welcome visitors daily until December 21, 2025.
Established in 2011, the German Christmas Market holds the distinction of being the oldest Christmas market in Bulgaria's capital and was, for many years, the city's sole festive market of its kind. Its enduring popularity has made it a staple of Sofia's winter calendar, drawing both locals and tourists to experience its unique blend of German tradition and Bulgarian spirit.
A Taste of German Tradition
Visitors to the market can immerse themselves in a festive atmosphere characterized by beautifully decorated wooden stalls. A wide array of traditional German culinary delights will be available, including savory Bratwurst sausages, crispy potato fries, and an assortment of sweet treats. A highlight for many is the aromatic Glühwein (mulled wine) infused with cinnamon and cloves, perfect for warding off the winter chill.
Beyond the gastronomic offerings, the market provides ample opportunities for holiday shopping. Stalls will feature a variety of handcrafted goods, unique souvenirs, traditional Christmas decorations, and candles, making it an ideal place to find distinctive gifts.
Entertainment and Family Fun
The German Christmas Market is renowned for its vibrant cultural program, catering to all ages. A central stage will host daily entertainment, including engaging children's theater performances, choir concerts from local schools and kindergartens, and evening performances by popular Bulgarian pop and jazz artists.
Families can also enjoy dedicated children's workshops and a festive photo booth. A much-anticipated event for younger visitors is the daily appearance of Santa Claus, typically at 6:00 PM. Entry to the market is free, making it an accessible celebration for everyone. The market operates daily, with typical hours extending from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Patronage and Community Spirit
The organization of the German Christmas Market is supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, underscoring its authentic German character. In addition to providing festive cheer, the market also engages in charitable activities each year, collecting donations and offering its platform to various foundations, reflecting a strong sense of community spirit.

While the German traditions like Glühwein and Bratwurst are a nice touch and draw many, it would be wonderful to see more integration of Bulgarian Christmas customs and local artists to truly blend cultures.
