Vatican Prepares for Star-Studded Summit
Pope Leo XIV is set to welcome a delegation of prominent Hollywood actors and directors to the Vatican City State this Saturday, November 15, 2025. The gathering, which will take place in the Apostolic Palace, is designed to initiate a deeper dialogue between the Catholic Church and the world of cinema, focusing on how artistic creativity can contribute to the Church's mission and promote universal human values.
The event is a significant part of the Church's ongoing Jubilee Year celebrations and follows previous engagements by both Pope Leo XIV and his predecessor, Pope Francis, with various cultural figures.
Distinguished Guests Expected
Approximately three dozen figures from the film industry are anticipated to attend the special audience. Among the confirmed attendees are acclaimed actors such as Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Adam Scott, Monica Bellucci, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, and Viggo Mortensen. The list of directors includes Oscar winners Spike Lee, George Miller, Giuseppe Tornatore, and Gus Van Sant.
The Vatican's Dicastery for Culture and Education stated that Pope Leo XIV 'has expressed his desire to deepen the dialogue with the World of Cinema... exploring the possibilities that artistic creativity offers to the mission of the Church and the promotion of human values.'
A Papal Tradition of Engaging the Arts
This upcoming meeting builds upon a tradition of papal engagement with the arts. Pope Leo XIV, who was elected on May 8, 2025, as the first American-born pontiff, has already met with Hollywood figures like Al Pacino in June and Robert De Niro last week. His predecessor, Pope Francis, also hosted similar gatherings, including one with comedians in June 2024 and another with visual artists in June 2023.
Ahead of the event, the Vatican also revealed some of Pope Leo XIV's favorite films, offering a glimpse into his personal cinematic tastes. These include:
- 'It's a Wonderful Life' (1946)
- 'The Sound of Music' (1965)
- 'Ordinary People' (1980)
- 'Life Is Beautiful' (1997)
Fostering Dialogue and Values
The initiative underscores the Church's commitment to engaging with contemporary culture and exploring how creative expression can serve spiritual and ethical reflection. By bringing together leaders from the film industry, the Vatican aims to open new avenues for collaboration and mutual understanding on themes of human dignity, morality, and the power of storytelling. The discussions are expected to highlight the profound impact of cinema on global society and its potential to convey messages that resonate with human values.

It's admirable that the Pope wants to discuss values with influential artists, recognizing their global reach. Yet, one has to wonder if these celebrities are truly the best moral compasses for such a significant conversation.

What a joke. Celebrities lecturing on values? No thanks.

Wasting time and resources on superficial talks. Get back to basics.

While it's good to see the Church reaching out, I hope these discussions go beyond photo opportunities. True dialogue needs depth and follow-through to be meaningful.
