Moldova's Economy Minister Meets EU Ambassador to Bolster Economic Ties and European Integration

High-Level Discussions on Economic Cooperation

On November 10, 2025, Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Eugen Osmochescu, held a significant meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Moldova, Iwona Piórko. The discussions centered on strengthening economic relations between Moldova and the European Union, as well as advancing Moldova's integration into the European market.

Minister Osmochescu underscored the critical importance of close cooperation with the EU for fostering a modern, competitive, and sustainable Moldovan economy. He stated, 'Moldova is gradually integrating into the European market, strengthening its position as a regional hub for innovation and business. Together, we are building a strong and prosperous European Moldova.'

EU as Moldova's Key Economic Partner

The meeting highlighted the European Union's pivotal role as Moldova's main economic partner. Statistical data reveals that the EU accounts for over 67 percent of Moldova's exports and more than half of its imports. Furthermore, over 80 percent of direct foreign investments in Moldova's economy originate from the EU.

This robust economic partnership is a cornerstone of Moldova's strategic objective to align with European standards and achieve full integration into the EU single market. The ongoing dialogue aims to identify new opportunities for economic growth and enhance Moldova's competitiveness on the international stage.

Progress in European Integration and the Growth Plan

Moldova has made substantial strides in its European integration journey. The country was granted EU candidate status on June 23, 2022, and accession negotiations officially commenced on June 25, 2024. A significant milestone was reached on September 22, 2025, when Moldova successfully completed the screening process, a crucial step in assessing its compliance with EU legislation.

A key instrument supporting Moldova's economic development and EU convergence is the €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova, proposed by the European Commission in October 2024 and approved in March 2025. The first regular payment of €18.9 million under this facility was disbursed in September 2025. This plan is designed to accelerate reforms, improve access to the EU's single market, and mobilize investments for job creation and economic growth.

Future Outlook and Key Initiatives

Moldova has set an ambitious target to finalize its EU accession negotiations by 2028, a goal supported by the ongoing reforms and the EU's financial assistance. Recent achievements further underscore this commitment, including Moldova's inclusion in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) as of October 2025, which facilitates cheaper and faster euro bank transfers. Additionally, integration into the EU Roaming area is proposed for January 2026, allowing Moldovan citizens to use mobile services in the EU without roaming fees.

The 2025 Enlargement Report presented by the European Commission recognized Moldova's significant progress, noting that the country recorded the biggest leap in its level of preparedness for EU accession in the past year. These developments collectively highlight a period of intensified cooperation and tangible progress in Moldova's path towards full European integration.

While the economic benefits from the EU Growth Plan are undeniable, Moldova must also ensure its domestic industries can compete effectively without being overshadowed.

All these billions, but will it actually reach the people, or just fuel corruption?

Becoming part of SEPA and the proposed roaming area will certainly help citizens, but the government needs to address internal reforms like judicial independence to truly align with EU standards.

2028 is too ambitious; it will rush reforms and cause instability. Be realistic.
