China Reaffirms Strong Support for UN's Core Role at Belem Climate Summit

China Pledges Continued Multilateralism at COP30

BELEM, Brazil – Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, serving as President Xi Jinping's special representative, reaffirmed China's unwavering support for the United Nations' core role in international affairs during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, November 7, 2025. The high-level discussion took place on the sidelines of the Belem Climate Summit (COP30) in Brazil.

Vice Premier Ding emphasized that China would 'adhere to true multilateralism' and continue to 'fully support the core position and role of the United Nations (UN) in international affairs,' irrespective of shifts in the global landscape. He further stated China's commitment to promoting dialogue and cooperation among nations to contribute to world peace and development.

Strengthening China-UN Cooperation

The meeting highlighted the deepening cooperation between China and the UN, particularly as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the global body's founding. Ding Xuexiang underscored China's dedication to a path of 'high-quality, green and low-carbon development,' noting that the country has consistently improved its own green development while providing high-quality, low-carbon products and services to other nations, thereby supporting the global green transition.

He also stressed the critical importance of upholding true multilateralism, strengthening solidarity, and coordination to ensure sustained progress in global climate governance, especially as COP30 marks a significant phase in the full implementation of global climate governance.

UN Secretary-General Commends China's Contributions

Secretary-General Guterres expressed his profound gratitude for China's 'consistent support' of the UN's work. He highly commended China's achievements in green development, acknowledging that China has 'honored its commitments and taken actions that go beyond its pledges' in addressing climate change.

Guterres lauded China as 'not only a key leader in global climate governance but also an important pillar of world peace and multilateralism.' He also noted the UN's appreciation and support for President Xi Jinping's Global Governance Initiative, recognizing its significance for improving and reforming the existing global governance system.

China's Growing Role in Global Governance

China has significantly increased its engagement with the UN in recent decades, becoming the second-largest contributor to both the UN's regular budget and its peacekeeping budget. Furthermore, China provides more personnel to UN peacekeeping operations than any other permanent member of the Security Council, demonstrating its expanding role in global peace and security. This reaffirmation of support underscores China's continued commitment to multilateralism and its active participation in addressing global challenges through the UN framework.

Secretary-General Guterres's commendation highlights China's growing role in global governance, yet we must remember that increased influence also brings increased responsibility to uphold universal values. Their domestic policies often conflict with UN principles.

Don't forget their human rights record while they talk about 'peace and development'.

While China's efforts in green development are noted, it's important to differentiate between domestic achievements and their global impact, particularly regarding supply chains and investments in other countries. A holistic view is needed.

More about projecting influence than genuine global cooperation.

UN praising China? Sounds like they're just playing along with a major donor.
