European Parliament President Roberta Metsola Addresses Moldovan Parliament, Reaffirming EU Support

Metsola Reaffirms EU Commitment to Moldova's European Future

Chișinău, Moldova – European Parliament President Roberta Metsola concluded a significant official visit to the Republic of Moldova on November 7, 2025, where she addressed a plenary meeting of the Moldovan Parliament. Her speech, delivered on the occasion of the establishment of the 12th Legislative Parliament, strongly reiterated the European Union's steadfast support for Moldova's European integration and its journey towards EU membership.

During her address, President Metsola emphasized that 'the European promise is no longer a distant idea on the horizon… it is happening now' for Moldova. She highlighted the shared values of democracy, peace, and the rule of law, affirming that Moldova's future lies within the European Union. The visit aimed to reinforce the country's ongoing path towards European Union membership, a process that saw accession negotiations officially begin on June 25, 2024.

High-Level Meetings and Engagement

President Metsola's agenda in Chișinău was packed with high-level engagements designed to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss Moldova's reform efforts. She held meetings with key Moldovan officials, including President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. A joint press conference with President Sandu was also a central part of her visit, providing an opportunity to publicly affirm the strong partnership between the EU and Moldova.

Beyond official discussions, President Metsola also engaged with the younger generation, participating in a public event dedicated to youth at the 'Spiru Haret' Theoretical High School in Chișinău. This interaction underscored the EU's commitment to involving Moldovan youth in the country's European future. Additionally, during her visit, President Metsola officially opened a European Parliament Office in Chișinău, further solidifying the EU's presence and support in the country.

Moldova's Progress on the European Path

Metsola's visit comes at a pivotal time for Moldova, which has made significant strides in its European integration efforts. Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted candidate status in June 2022. The European Commission's annual Enlargement Report has acknowledged Moldova's remarkable progress in its preparation level for EU accession. Moldova aims to conclude accession negotiations for various chapters by 2028 and has set a target date of 2030 for full EU membership.

The European Parliament President's message included assurances of increased investments in Moldova's future through the Moldova Mechanism and an eagerness to advance accession negotiations. This visit serves as a clear signal of the EU's unwavering commitment to supporting Moldova as it navigates its path towards becoming a full member of the European family.

The idea of Moldova joining the EU is appealing for regional stability. But we must be realistic about the immense structural changes required from Moldova and the EU's capacity to absorb new members without strain.

It's encouraging to see Moldova's progress and the EU's commitment. Yet, concerns about the impact on existing member states and the potential for internal EU disagreements over expansion remain valid.

Geopolitical chess, not genuine integration. Moldova is just a pawn.

Metsola's visit clearly signals strong intent, which is positive for Moldova's morale. However, the true test will be the consistent implementation of reforms and whether the EU can deliver on its investment promises effectively.

Just another political stunt. The EU has its own problems to fix first.
