Yukon Party Secures Majority Government in Territorial Election

Yukon Party Returns to Power with Decisive Majority

The Yukon Party, under the leadership of Currie Dixon, has achieved a significant victory in the territorial election held on November 3, 2025, securing a majority government. The party won 14 of the 21 seats in the expanded Legislative Assembly, marking its return to power after nine years in opposition. This outcome represents the largest caucus for any party in Yukon history and the first time the party has garnered over 50% of the popular vote, specifically 51.99%, since 1978.

Currie Dixon, who will become the first premier born in the Yukon, expressed that voters opted for change. 'Tonight Yukoners chose to move on from the status quo. They chose a new path. They chose change,' Dixon stated in his victory speech.

NDP Forms Official Opposition, Liberals See Significant Losses

The New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Kate White, emerged as the official opposition, securing 6 seats in the legislature. The NDP also saw an increase in its popular vote, reaching 37.83%. White expressed excitement over her party's gains, noting their commitment to holding the new government accountable on issues such as affordability, healthcare access, housing, and education.

In contrast, the incumbent Yukon Liberal Party experienced a substantial defeat, winning only 1 seat. The party's leader, Mike Pemberton, who assumed leadership in June, failed to win his own riding of Whitehorse West. The Liberals' popular vote dropped to 10.18%. Pemberton acknowledged the voters' desire for change, stating, 'The results were not what we hoped for. Yukoners wanted change, and I respect that.'

Key Issues and Future Priorities

The 2025 election saw an expanded legislature, increasing the number of seats from 19 to 21, with 11 seats required for a majority. Voter turnout for this election was approximately 53%, a decrease from the 65.5% recorded in 2021.

Dixon outlined several priorities for his incoming government, including:

  • Addressing the territory's housing crisis
  • Improving healthcare infrastructure to meet population growth
  • Enhancing accountability within the judicial system
  • Focusing on economic growth and the private sector

A non-binding plebiscite on electoral reform, proposing a shift to ranked ballots, was also held concurrently with the general election, with 56.1% of voters favoring the change. However, Dixon indicated that electoral reform would not be a priority for his administration, stating, 'my view is that that's not something we should be prioritizing, and we should be focusing on issues that matter to Yukoners.'

Economic growth and housing focus? That's exactly what we need. Time to get things done!

The decisive win for the Yukon Party suggests a desire for new direction, yet the lower voter turnout compared to 2021 indicates a potential apathy or dissatisfaction with the political landscape overall.

It's positive that housing and healthcare are top priorities, but the article doesn't detail how their economic growth strategy will benefit all Yukoners, especially those struggling with rising costs.

The NDP becoming official opposition with increased popular vote is a good sign for democratic debate, even if the Yukon Party holds a strong majority. It ensures there's still a voice for alternative perspectives.
