Tragic Incident in Southeastern Finland
Two individuals lost their lives following a powerful van explosion that occurred outside the Hotel Joronjälki in Joroinen, southeastern Finland, on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which took place around 12:30 PM, has prompted a comprehensive investigation by the Eastern Finland Police Department.
Details of the Explosion and Damage
The blast caused significant destruction, with at least eight vehicles reportedly destroyed. Five of these vehicles belonged to the hotel, while the others were owned by guests or workers. The explosion's force was considerable, as described by hotel owner Auvo Puurtinen, who stated, 'The pressure wave was strong. Car bumpers flew across the yard. Windows shattered. Part of the brick wall was thrown into the air.' The fire triggered by the explosion spread to the hotel's entrance canopy but was brought under control by emergency services before it could ignite the main building. Despite this, some doors, windows, and the outer wall of the hotel sustained damage.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a fire investigation, but the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. Police have not yet confirmed whether the incident was accidental or deliberate. The van involved in the explosion belonged to workers who were staying at the hotel and is believed to have contained volatile materials. Puurtinen speculated on the intensity of the blast, remarking, 'Something explosive must have been inside the van. There's no way an ordinary vehicle fire could cause such a blast. The smoke clouds looked like something after a nuclear bomb.' A forensic team is currently on site, and the area remains cordoned off as investigations continue. The identities, ages, and other details of the deceased have not yet been released by authorities.
Emergency Response
Emergency services received a call reporting a medium-scale fire at Motellikuja at approximately 12:20 PM. Seven units were dispatched to the scene, and responders successfully brought the flames under control, preventing further spread to the main hotel structure. Police have indicated that further details regarding the incident are expected to be released by midday Sunday.
