Kylemore Abbey Extends Gratitude to U.S. Supporters in New York
Representatives from Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, Ireland, are scheduled to travel to New York City on November 4 to host a special reception, expressing profound gratitude to their dedicated U.S. supporters. The event aims to acknowledge the vital contributions that have enabled the successful completion of the Abbey's new Benedictine Monastery, a landmark project for the community.
The gala reception will take place at the 101 Club in the Kalikow Building on Park Avenue. Among the attendees from Kylemore Abbey will be Mother Karol O'Connell, OSB, Abbess, and Executive Director Liz McConnell. Ms. McConnell highlighted the indispensable role of American friends and benefactors, stating, 'This would not have been possible without the generous support of U.S. friends and benefactors.' A key supporter, Dan Cremins, COO of Kalikow, is sponsoring the reception, recognized for his 'tireless support' over the years.
A New Era: The Completed Benedictine Monastery
The journey to complete the new Benedictine Monastery has been a significant undertaking for Kylemore Abbey. Described as the 'first female Benedictine monastery in Ireland for 400 years,' this purpose-built facility provides a permanent home for the growing monastic community and serves as a residential retreat and spiritual education center. Construction commenced in September 2019, with the nuns officially taking up residence in July 2024.
The new monastery features spaces for prayer, an education area for groups, residential accommodation for guests on retreats, and dedicated monastic living quarters for up to 15 nuns. Its architectural and spiritual significance was recently recognized when it was voted Ireland's favourite building in 2025, earning the prestigious RIAI Public Choice Award.
The Enduring Impact of American Philanthropy
U.S. supporters have played a critical role in the realization of Kylemore Abbey's projects, particularly the new Monastery. Fundraising efforts have often been facilitated through partnerships with organizations such as the Irish American Partnership and The Ireland Funds America, which enable U.S. donors to make tax-deductible contributions. These initiatives have included matching gift challenges, significantly amplifying the impact of individual donations.
The Abbey, a non-profit organization, relies on both tourism and philanthropy to sustain its monastic mission and preserve its rich heritage. The Benedictine nuns, who have resided at Kylemore since 1920, continue their tradition of 'ora et labora' (prayer and work) in the tranquil setting of Connemara, welcoming thousands of visitors annually.

Why are wealthy Americans funding Irish religious buildings?

While it's commendable to see such dedication to preserving Irish heritage and faith, one has to wonder if these substantial funds could also address more pressing social issues in Ireland.

A beautiful project, truly a blessing for Ireland.

A 'favorite building' award is just PR for a private project.

Seems like misplaced priorities for charity funds.
