National Awards Ceremony Celebrates Lifesavers and Volunteers
Water Safety Ireland's National Annual Awards Ceremony is being held today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at O'Reilly Hall, University College Dublin (UCD), in Dublin. The prestigious event is dedicated to acknowledging the extraordinary courage of individuals who have saved lives from drowning and the unwavering commitment of volunteers who contribute significantly to drowning prevention across Ireland.
Recognising Heroic Rescues
A total of 73 individuals are being honoured for their swift and selfless actions, which resulted in the saving of 53 lives from drowning in the past year. These heroic rescuers will receive various accolades, including the 'Seiko Just in Time Awards', Rescue Appreciation Awards, and Bravery Awards. The presentations are being made by Mr. Jerry Buttimer TD, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. The 'Seiko Just in Time' award specifically recognises those who have intervened to prevent a drowning incident.
Celebrating Dedicated Volunteer Service
The ceremony also pays tribute to the vital role of volunteers in promoting water safety. Over 70 Water Safety Ireland volunteers are being presented with Long-Service Awards, acknowledging their collective 1,755 years of voluntary service. These dedicated individuals teach essential swimming, water rescue, and survival skills in communities nationwide, forming the backbone of Water Safety Ireland's efforts to reduce drowning statistics.
A Commitment to Drowning Prevention
Water Safety Ireland's National Awards Ceremony serves as a crucial platform to highlight the importance of water safety education and preparedness. Each year, the organisation shines a light on those who have made lasting contributions to making Ireland's waters safer for everyone. The awards underscore the power of collective action in preventing tragedies and ensuring that Ireland's coastlines, rivers, and lakes remain safe.

Celebrating heroism is important for morale and public recognition of vital work in our communities. Yet, the sheer number of rescues suggests a broader problem that needs to be addressed through better policy and improved public access to safety equipment.

Is this just a photo op for politicians? More concrete funding is needed, not just ceremonies!

A ceremony won't fix systemic issues. We need real action, not just applause.
