New Digital Services Enhance Resident Convenience
The Public Security Police Force and the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) in Macao have officially launched new electronic services for the collection of Residence Authorization Certificates and the renewal of Macao Non-permanent Resident Identity Cards. The initiative, which commenced on October 20, 2025, is part of the Macao SAR Government's broader vision to streamline administration and continuously improve the efficiency and convenience of public services.
This inter-departmental collaboration allows eligible residents to complete these essential formalities with 'no time and geographical constraints,' marking a significant step in Macao's digital transformation efforts.
Streamlined Application Process
The newly introduced electronic services offer a more efficient pathway for residents. According to official statements, eligible Macao residents can now initiate the process by collecting their Residence Authorization Certificate through the widely used Macao One Account platform. Following this, they can proceed to apply for the renewal of their identity card at the self-service kiosks operated by the Identification Services Bureau.
For residents aged 18 or above, an even more direct option is available: they can apply for identity card renewal directly via the Macao One Account, leveraging the integrated 'Collect Certificate, Renew ID Card' e-service. This service is designed to simplify the renewal process, allowing applicants to use existing 'Photo for identification documents' stored in the 'My photos' section of their Macao One Account.
Eligibility and Accessibility
The electronic services cater to a broad range of residents. Macao residents who are applying for Residence Authorization renewal through the Public Security Police Force, as well as those granted Temporary Residency renewal via the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute, can opt to receive their Residence Authorization Certificate and relevant e-notifications through the Macao One Account.
Furthermore, Macao residents aged 5 or above are eligible to conduct self-service renewal of their identity cards at any Government 24-hour Self-service Centre, provided it is within the validity period of their Residence Authorization Certificate collected via Macao One Account. It is important to note that applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the self-service renewal process.
Macao's Digital Government Push
The launch of these services underscores Macao's ongoing commitment to developing a robust e-government infrastructure. The Macao One Account, initially launched in 2019, has become a central hub for over 621,000 users, offering more than 430 services across various sectors including social welfare, transportation, and healthcare. This platform has been instrumental in reshaping how residents interact with government services, positioning Macao as a forward-thinking smart city. The DSI has consistently worked towards expanding its electronic offerings, including extending 24-hour self-service options for ID card renewals, reflecting a broader trend towards digital transformation within the region.

Centralizing all personal data like this is a huge privacy risk. Who truly controls it?

It's great to see Macao embracing digital efficiency for public services, but consolidating so much personal information onto a single platform raises legitimate questions about data security and potential misuse. We need strong safeguards in place.
