Nationwide Demonstrations Follow Ceasefire Announcement
Tens of thousands of people participated in pro-Palestinian rallies across Australia on Sunday, October 12, 2025, following the implementation of a US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza. Major demonstrations were held in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, among other cities, marking two years since the conflict's escalation in October 2023.
The rallies occurred as Israeli troops began pulling back under the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, which aims to end the conflict that has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza.
Attendance Figures Across Key Cities
In Sydney, the Palestine Action Group (PAG), organizers of the event, estimated a turnout of 30,000 people. New South Wales (NSW) Police, however, provided a lower estimate of approximately 8,000 attendees. The Sydney march proceeded from Hyde Park to Belmore Park in the central business district, after a planned route to the Sydney Opera House was prohibited by a court decision. Police reported no significant incidents or arrests during the Sydney demonstration.
Melbourne also saw a substantial gathering, with Victoria Police estimating around 3,500 protesters. In Perth, thousands of individuals joined the rallies, advocating for Palestinian rights.
Protesters Express Demands and Skepticism
Demonstrators at the rallies voiced calls for a 'free Palestine,' self-determination for Palestinians in Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip. Many participants expressed skepticism regarding the longevity and effectiveness of the newly established ceasefire. Amal Naser, an organizer of the Sydney rally, stated that 'even if the ceasefire holds, Israel is still conducting a military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.'
The protests underscore ongoing concerns among a segment of the Australian public regarding the situation in the Palestinian territories, with organizers vowing to continue their advocacy.

Police numbers tell the real story. Not as many as they claim.

It's understandable that people want to voice their concerns about Gaza, but it's important to differentiate between advocating for human rights and supporting specific political outcomes.

Solidarity with Gaza! The ceasefire is just a start, true freedom is next.

While humanitarian aid is crucial for Gaza, focusing solely on one side overlooks the broader historical context and security concerns for all parties involved.
