Prime Minister Unveils Major Agricultural Initiative
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the 'PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' on October 11, 2025, during a special Krishi programme held at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. This significant initiative is designed to bolster agricultural development across India, with a substantial outlay of ₹24,000 crore dedicated to its implementation. The scheme was unveiled alongside the 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses', with both initiatives collectively representing an investment of over ₹35,000 crore in the agriculture and allied sectors.
Objectives and Scope of the Yojana
The 'PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' is set to run for a period of six years, commencing from the fiscal year 2025-26 and extending until 2030-31. Its primary objectives include:
- Enhancing agricultural productivity.
- Increasing the adoption of crop diversification and sustainable agriculture practices.
- Improving irrigation facilities.
- Facilitating the availability of long-term and short-term credit for farmers.
- Augmenting post-harvest storage at the panchayat and block levels.
Integrated Approach and Financial Commitment
The 'PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' adopts a comprehensive approach by integrating 36 existing schemes from 11 different departments, along with various state schemes and local partnerships with the private sector. This convergence aims to maximize efficiency and impact. The Union Cabinet had approved the scheme on July 16, 2025, following its announcement in the Union Budget 2025-26. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that these schemes are designed to 'transform the fortunes of millions of farmers' and contribute significantly to India's self-reliance in the agricultural sector.
Broader Agricultural Development Initiatives
During the launch event, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for numerous other projects in the agriculture and allied sectors. These include projects valued at over ₹5,450 crore in animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing, with an additional ₹815 crore allocated for new projects. Furthermore, 1,054 projects worth ₹3,650 crore, utilizing the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), were also launched. The 'PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' draws inspiration from the successful NITI Aayog's Aspirational District Programme, aiming to replicate its impact in agricultural development.

The intentions behind enhancing agricultural productivity are good, but the success will truly depend on flawless execution at the local level. We've seen schemes falter before due to implementation issues.

Why only 100 districts? What about the millions of other struggling farmers?

Integrating 36 schemes is a smart move for efficiency on paper. Yet, coordinating so many departments and state entities could create a bureaucratic nightmare, potentially slowing down progress.
