China Condemns Taiwan Leader Lai Ching-te's 'Independence' Remarks

Beijing Issues Stern Rebuke Over Taiwan Leader's Speech

Beijing, China – On October 10, 2025, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun issued a strong condemnation of remarks made by Taiwan's leader, Lai Ching-te, during his 'Double Tenth Day' address. Guo Jiakun asserted that Lai's statements peddled 'Taiwan independence' fallacies and distorted historical facts, warning that such actions pose a significant threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Lai Ching-te's 'Double Tenth Day' Address

During his speech on Taiwan's National Day, Lai Ching-te reportedly made several statements that drew Beijing's ire. He called on the mainland to 'cease its distortion of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758' and affirmed Taiwan's commitment to 'uphold the status quo' and 'ensure peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait'. Furthermore, Lai pledged to bolster Taiwan's defense capabilities, including accelerating the development of a 'T-Dome' air defense system and increasing defense spending to over 3 percent of GDP next year, aiming for 5 percent by 2030.

China Reaffirms One-China Principle

In response, Guo Jiakun reiterated China's unwavering commitment to the one-China principle. He stated, 'there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory,' emphasizing that this is the 'real status quo across the Taiwan Strait'. Guo characterized Lai's address as calling 'white black and confused right and wrong,' and accused him of spreading a 'false narrative of 'democracy v.s. authoritarianism''. The spokesperson labeled Lai as a 'diehard troublemaker, danger-creator and warmonger'.

The one-China principle is a cornerstone of Beijing's foreign policy, asserting that the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China, and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of it. This principle guides China's opposition to any official diplomatic relations between Taiwan and other countries.

Warnings Against Separatist Activities and External Interference

Guo Jiakun stressed that the primary threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and external interference. He warned that Lai's efforts to pursue 'Taiwan independence' and resist reunification through military buildup would only push Taiwan towards the 'danger of military conflict'. China also urged foreign politicians to cease interfering in its internal affairs and to stop supporting 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces.

Calling Lai a 'troublemaker' is just typical CCP propaganda. He's a leader.

Enough with the independence talk. Peace requires adherence to one-China.

Every nation has the right to bolster its defenses against threats. This is self-preservation.

Lai's speech aims to assert Taiwan's identity while still claiming to uphold the status quo, which is a difficult balance. However, Beijing views any such assertion as a move towards independence, escalating tensions.

Lai's call for the mainland to cease distorting UNGA 2758 highlights a key point of contention over international interpretation. Yet, China sees this as an attempt to undermine the one-China consensus, further hardening its stance.

While China maintains its historical claims, Taiwan has developed into a vibrant democracy with its own distinct identity. The fundamental disagreement over sovereignty makes any long-term resolution incredibly complex.
