Deadly Flooding Claims at Least 28 Lives Across Central and Southeastern Mexico

Widespread Devastation and Rising Death Toll

Heavy rainfall and tropical storms have unleashed devastating floods and landslides across central and southeastern Mexico, leading to the deaths of at least 28 people. The severe weather, which intensified on Friday, October 10, 2025, has caused extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and vital services, prompting a significant emergency response. Authorities confirmed at least 28 fatalities across the affected regions. Hidalgo state reported the highest number of casualties, with 16 deaths. In neighboring Puebla state, nine people died, and 13 others were reported missing. Additionally, Veracruz recorded two deaths, including a police officer, while one child died in the central state of Queretaro due to a landslide.

Extensive Damage to Homes and Critical Infrastructure

The relentless downpours have resulted in overflowing rivers and numerous landslides, causing significant material damage and impacting thousands of residences and critical infrastructure. In Hidalgo alone, at least 1,000 homes, 59 hospitals and clinics, and 308 schools have sustained damage. Across six states, nearly 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of roads have been affected, and power outages have left over 320,000 users without electricity. In Puebla, a landslide ruptured a gas pipeline, and approximately 80,000 people have been affected by the heavy rains. Veracruz saw around 5,000 homes damaged by the deluge.

National Response Mobilized

In response to the crisis, the Mexican government has deployed substantial resources. Mexico has mobilized 8,700 military personnel to assist the affected population. The Secretariat of the Navy deployed 3,300 personnel to aid in Puebla, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí. Evacuation efforts were also underway, with the Navy moving nearly 900 people to shelters in Veracruz, particularly from the hard-hit city of Poza Rica where electricity was cut as a precautionary measure.

Ongoing Efforts and Outlook

The ongoing severe weather continues to pose a threat, with authorities monitoring the situation closely. The focus remains on search and rescue operations, providing humanitarian aid, and assessing the full extent of the damage to facilitate recovery efforts in the impacted central and southeastern regions of Mexico. Rains are expected to continue through Sunday, exacerbating the challenges faced by affected communities.

It's good that aid is being mobilized, but this article highlights a pattern of extreme weather events that require a fundamental shift in how we protect our most vulnerable communities, not just react to crises.

My heart goes out to the victims and responders. Yet, this tragedy underscores the urgent need for global cooperation on climate change, as these events are becoming more frequent and intense.
