Road Closure Implemented for Safety
The Morne Depoudré road in Saint Barthélemy has been temporarily closed to traffic. This measure has been enacted due to persistent heavy rainfall and as a critical precautionary step to ensure public safety on the island. The closure comes amidst a period of unstable weather affecting the region.
Yellow Alert Issued for Severe Weather
The decision to close the road is directly related to a Yellow Alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms, which was issued for Saint-Barthélemy by the Guadeloupe Meteorological Center. This alert, designated as Episode n°17-IN, began on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, and is expected to continue through Thursday, October 9, 2025. The unstable weather conditions are primarily influenced by the tail end of Tropical Wave N°30 and the approaching Tropical Storm Jerry.
Forecasters anticipate intense downpours, with rainfall accumulations potentially reaching between 30 to 50 mm (approximately 1.2 to 2 inches) in three hours or less. Such rainfall rates can rapidly lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas, and pose a significant risk of flash flooding. Tropical storm watches have been in effect for several islands in the region, including Saint Barthélemy, as Tropical Storm Jerry is expected to strengthen and pass near or to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.
Morne Depoudré: A Central Location
Morne Depoudré is described as a 'mini quartier' located centrally within Saint Barthélemy. It is situated between other key areas such as Saint-Jean, Morne Criquet, Anse du Gouverneur, Gouverneur, and Lurin, forming part of the Hauts de Saint-Jean. The road's closure impacts a significant part of the island's internal network, necessitating caution for residents and visitors.
Public Safety Remains Priority
The temporary closure underscores the authorities' commitment to public safety during adverse weather events. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to flooding. The Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy typically issues advisories and manages road infrastructure to mitigate risks associated with severe weather. The road will reopen once conditions improve and it is deemed safe for passage.

So much for my plans today. Totally unnecessary disruption.

While the immediate threat of Tropical Storm Jerry justifies the closure, it also serves as a stark reminder of how climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such weather phenomena in the Caribbean.

While road closures are a hassle, the potential for flash flooding is a real concern. It's a tough balance between safety and daily convenience for residents.
