Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested in Florida and charged with igniting the deadly January 2025 Palisades wildfire that ravaged parts of Los Angeles. Federal prosecutors announced the arrest on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, stating that Rinderknecht faces a federal charge of 'destruction of property by means of fire,' which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

Authorities allege that Rinderknecht maliciously started what was initially known as the Lachman Fire shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, January 1, 2025, near the Skull Rock Trailhead in Pacific Palisades. This initial blaze smoldered underground for nearly a week before resurfacing on January 7, 2025, amid heavy winds, rapidly escalating into the catastrophic Palisades Fire.

The wildfire proved to be one of the most destructive in Los Angeles history, burning 23,448 acres and resulting in the deaths of 12 people. It destroyed a staggering 6,837 structures across Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu, and caused an estimated $25 billion in damages. The fire was fully contained on January 31, 2025.

Investigation Details and Allegations

The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department and the United States Forest Service, gathered extensive evidence. According to prosecutors, Rinderknecht, a former Uber driver, was in the area after dropping off a passenger on New Year's Eve. Investigators allege he took videos on his iPhone at a hilltop location and listened to a rap song with fire imagery shortly before environmental sensors detected the fire's ignition at 12:12 a.m. on January 1, 2025.

Further allegations include that Rinderknecht made 'false statements' to investigators regarding his whereabouts, which were contradicted by GPS data from his phone. A 'barbecue-style' lighter was reportedly found in his vehicle. Additionally, authorities revealed that Rinderknecht allegedly used ChatGPT in the months leading up to the fire to generate a 'dystopian painting depicting a burning city with people trying to flee.'

Legal Proceedings Underway

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California stated, 'While we cannot undo the damage and destruction that was done, we hope his arrest and the charges against him bring some measure of justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy.' Rinderknecht made his initial court appearance in Orlando, Florida, and a hearing to consider bond and extradition proceedings has been scheduled for October 17. No motive for the alleged arson has been publicly presented by authorities.
