Tajani made the announcement on the sidelines of an international conference in Rome, emphasizing Italy's commitment to peace by stating, 'We must be champions of peace.' The Ancient Tradition of the Olympic Truce

The concept of an Olympic Truce, or 'Ekecheiria,' dates back to ancient Greece in 776 BC. During this period, warring city-states agreed to temporarily cease hostilities to ensure the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators traveling to and from the Olympic Games. This tradition was revived by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992 and subsequently supported by the United Nations through Resolution 48/11 in 1993. Since then, the UN General Assembly has adopted resolutions every two years, urging member states to observe the Olympic Truce as a symbol of peace and unity. These Games will be hosted across various sites in Lombardy and Northeast Italy, marking the first time the Winter Olympics will be co-hosted by multiple cities: Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. This will be the fourth time Italy has hosted the Olympic Games.
