Royal Recognition in Monaco
On Monday, October 6, 2025, Princess Caroline of Hanover and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco were formally honored with two of France's most prestigious national distinctions. The ceremony, held in the opulent Salon des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) of the Prince's Palace in Monaco, saw the French Ambassador to the Principality, Jean d'Haussonville, present the accolades in the presence of Prince Albert II.
Princess Caroline's Cultural and Philanthropic Contributions
Princess Caroline of Hanover was elevated to the rank of Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit, the highest distinction within this order. Established by President Charles de Gaulle in 1963, the National Order of Merit acknowledges distinguished civil and military service. This rare honor recognizes Princess Caroline's significant and long-standing involvement in Monaco's cultural, philanthropic, and international activities. Her work with organizations such as the Princess Grace Foundation and AMADE Mondiale has notably advanced child welfare, education, and the arts both within Monaco and globally. Princess Caroline has previously been recognized by France, having received the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2014 and the Commander of the Order of Agricultural Merit in 2014.
Princess Stéphanie Honored for Humanitarian Work
Her younger sister, Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honour, France's most senior order of merit, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. This distinction acknowledges her unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes, particularly her extensive work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Princess Stéphanie founded the organization Fight Aids Monaco in 2004 and serves as a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador. Her commitment also includes the inauguration of the 'Maison de Vie' in Carpentras in 2010, a unique facility providing respite for individuals living with HIV.
Symbolic Recognition of Franco-Monegasque Ties
The awarding of these high distinctions underscores the enduring close relationship between Monaco and France. It serves as a formal recognition of the individual contributions of both princesses to the social and cultural fabric of the region, highlighting their decades of public service and commitment to various causes.

More royal pomp and circumstance. Who cares about this?

Just another example of privilege being rewarded over genuine merit.

It's good to see their humanitarian efforts recognized, especially Princess Stéphanie's work with HIV/AIDS. However, one could argue that such high state honors should be reserved for those who achieve greatness without the benefit of royal privilege.
