Vatican and Schwarzenegger Unite for Climate Action
The Holy See has partnered with former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a significant climate change event, the 'Raising Hope for Climate Justice Conference,' held from October 1-3, 2025. The three-day gathering in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, commemorates the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis' landmark environmental encyclical, 'Laudato Si'.' The conference aims to reflect on a decade of ecological commitment and galvanize renewed efforts for climate justice.
A press conference on September 30, 2025, formally announced the event, which brought together a diverse group of over 400 to 1,000 religious leaders, activists, scientists, policymakers, and civil society representatives.
Schwarzenegger Emphasizes Local Action and 'Terminating Pollution'
Arnold Schwarzenegger, a prominent advocate for climate action and founder of the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, headlined the conference. He underscored the importance of individual choices and local regulations in combating climate change, suggesting these are more impactful than federal policies.
During his address, Schwarzenegger praised Pope Leo XIV, calling him an 'action hero' for the Vatican's commitment to environmental sustainability, including plans to make the Vatican City State carbon neutral through initiatives like installing solar panels. He urged the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide to become 'crusaders for the environment' and to 'terminate pollution,' a phrase he used to simplify the message for broader public understanding.
Pope Leo XIV Calls for Unity and Urgent Action
Pope Leo XIV inaugurated the conference, delivering a strong message against indifference and resignation in the face of the global climate crisis. He encouraged unity around integral ecology and peace, stating, 'We are one family, with one Father, who makes the sun to rise and sends rain on everyone (Mt 5:45). We inhabit the same planet and must care for it together. I therefore renew my strong appeal for unity around integral ecology and for peace!'
The Pontiff also participated in a symbolic moment, placing his hands on a melting block of ice, to highlight the urgency of the crisis. He emphasized that the true heroes are those who work together to protect the planet, echoing the sentiment that 'there is no solution in indifference.'
'Laudato Si'' Legacy and Future Commitments
The conference served as a significant milestone for the 10th anniversary of 'Laudato Si',' Pope Francis' influential 2015 encyclical that framed environmental protection as a moral imperative. The document has inspired a global grassroots movement and continues to challenge leaders to address both 'the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.'
Other notable speakers included Marina Silva, Brazil's Minister of Environment, who called on world leaders to honor their climate commitments ahead of the upcoming COP30 meeting in Brazil in November. The Laudato Si' Movement, a key organizer, announced that the Vatican would launch a new 'Laudato Si' pledge' to further demonstrate its commitment to combating climate change.

Pope Leo XIV? This whole thing feels like a PR stunt, not real change.

Schwarzenegger's call for local action is valid, as change often starts at the grassroots level. Yet, without strong federal and international policies, local efforts can feel like bailing water with a thimble against a rising tide.

It's encouraging that religious institutions are emphasizing climate justice, linking it to moral imperatives. Still, the challenge remains in getting everyday people and resistant governments to make significant lifestyle and policy shifts.
