Prince Albert II Attends Launch of Carlos Takam Academy in Kigali, Fostering Youth Sport and Education

Monaco's Sovereign Prince Supports Rwandan Youth Initiative

His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco lent his support to African youth sport and education on Friday, September 26, 2025, by attending the launch of the Carlos Takam Academy in Kigali, Rwanda. The Sovereign Prince, a long-time advocate for sport as a vehicle for social progress, joined boxing personalities and dignitaries at the ceremony alongside French-Cameroonian champion Carlos Takam.

Prince Albert II's visit to Rwanda also included his attendance at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, marking a significant moment for global cycling as the first edition ever held on African soil. During his trip, he also engaged in other official duties, such as visiting apiary schools in Musanze to promote beekeeping and women's empowerment.

The Vision Behind the Carlos Takam Academy

The Carlos Takam Academy is an initiative of the Carlos Takam Foundation, which was established in Rwanda in 2023. The academy is scheduled to officially open its doors in March 2026 and is designed to offer young Africans a unique combination of high-level boxing training and academic support. The project is built upon three core pillars:

  • Education
  • Sport
  • Peace

The academy's primary goal is to equip promising athletes with the necessary tools to succeed both inside and outside the boxing ring. The foundation has also committed to sponsoring school fees for athletes selected to join the academy, highlighting the emphasis on holistic development.

Carlos Takam's Dedication to African Boxing

Carlos Takam, a renowned French-Cameroonian professional boxer, has an impressive career that includes facing top-tier opponents such as Anthony Joshua. Born in Douala, Cameroon, in 1980, Takam later moved to France to further his boxing skills. His extensive experience in the sport, coupled with his personal journey, fueled his decade-long ambition to 'bring a sports-study academy to Africa'.

The establishment of the Carlos Takam Foundation and the academy in Kigali reflects his commitment to promoting boxing across the continent and providing young talents with the infrastructure and coaching needed to thrive without having to relocate abroad. The launch event also featured the unveiling of the Louja Africa World Championship belt, developed in collaboration with the World Boxing Council, aimed at encouraging world-class boxing bouts to be staged in Africa.

Monaco's Enduring Ties with African Initiatives

Prince Albert II's presence at the academy's launch underscores Monaco's ongoing ties with African initiatives. His attendance signifies the Principality's belief in sport as a powerful driver of opportunity, development, and international cooperation. During his visit, Prince Albert II also met with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, further strengthening the relationship between Monaco and Rwanda.

It's wonderful to see figures like Carlos Takam investing in their home continent and providing opportunities. Yet, the broader challenge of scaling such initiatives to reach a wider population remains a significant hurdle.

Prince Albert's presence undoubtedly brings international attention and prestige to the project. Still, the real measure of success will be the tangible, sustained impact on the lives of Rwandan youth, not just the fanfare.

Another celebrity charity event. Is this truly sustainable or just good PR?

The commitment to sponsoring school fees is excellent, highlighting the importance of holistic development. However, ensuring the academy integrates seamlessly into the existing educational framework and doesn't create an elite bubble is also important.

The blend of sport and education is a strong model for youth development, offering valuable life skills. However, ensuring that these athletes have viable career paths beyond boxing is crucial for their long-term success.

Peace through boxing? Seems like a contradiction in terms, honestly.
