Record Daily Spike in Dengue Infections
Bangladesh's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health announced a significant surge in dengue fever cases, with 845 new infections and four deaths reported on Sunday, September 28, 2025. This figure represents the highest single-day count of dengue cases recorded in the country so far this year. The new data brings the total number of confirmed dengue cases in Bangladesh for 2025 to 46,051, with the cumulative death toll reaching 192.
Geographical Distribution and Cumulative Impact
The newly reported cases on Sunday were distributed across various divisions. Barishal Division recorded 166 new patients, Dhaka Division (excluding city corporations) saw 164, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) had 112, Khulna Division reported 101, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) registered 97, Chattogram Division 91, Rajshahi Division 54, Mymensingh Division 37, Rangpur Division 17, and Sylhet Division 6. Historical Context and Monsoon Season
Dengue fever is a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh, particularly during the June-September monsoon period, which is considered the peak season for the mosquito-borne disease. The current outbreak follows severe situations in previous years. In 2023, Bangladesh experienced its worst dengue outbreak on record, with 321,179 hospitalizations and 1,705 deaths. The year 2024 also saw a substantial number of cases, with 101,214 infections and 575 deaths.
Government Initiatives and Prevention Efforts
In response to the escalating threat, the Bangladeshi government has implemented various measures. A comprehensive seven-year National Dengue Prevention and Control Strategy (2024-2030) was unveiled to drastically reduce infections and deaths. This year, 602 dengue prevention campaigns have been conducted under the Climate Change and Health Project, aiming to mobilize communities against the disease. Additionally, urgent guidelines have been issued to educational institutions across the country to enhance awareness and prevention efforts among students and teachers. The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) also launched a Dengue dashboard on September 23, 2025, as a data-driven tool to monitor and respond to outbreaks.

Prevention campaigns are useless if the core issues aren't addressed. Just PR.

While the government has introduced various measures like the dengue dashboard and prevention campaigns, the sheer number of new infections suggests these efforts are not yet sufficient to curb the current outbreak. More immediate, impactful interventions seem necessary alongside strategic planning.

All these strategies, yet people are still dying. It's clearly not working.
