The freight train, operated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City de México (CPKC), struck the passenger vehicle and dragged it along the tracks. The Comonfort Civil Protection Department confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as four women and one man. Initial reports indicated that none of the deceased had been identified, though authorities later sought public assistance to locate their families. Some reports suggest the male and one female victim were elderly, while the other three women were between 20 and 25 years old.

While at least four individuals sustained injuries, some sources reported higher numbers, with up to 18 or more than 20 injured. The injured were promptly transported to various hospitals in Guanajuato, including the Hospital Comunitario de Comonfort, Hospital General de San Miguel Allende, and Hospital General de Celaya.
