Body of Fallen Kenyan Officer Kennedy Mutuko Nzuve Repatriated from Haiti

Fallen Officer's Body Arrives in Nairobi

The body of Corporal Kennedy Mutuko Nzuve, a Kenyan police officer who tragically died in a road accident while on duty with the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti, arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi on the evening of September 26, 2025. The solemn reception was attended by senior officials from the National Police Service (NPS) and the officer's grieving family, including his mother, Serah Nzuve.

Tragic Incident in Haiti

Corporal Nzuve lost his life on August 31, 2025, following a fatal road accident in Haiti. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 PM along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road at Perlerin 9. According to reports from the MSSM, the accident took place during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro armored vehicles. One of the vehicles, which was towing the other, developed mechanical problems, leading to the fatal crash. Corporal Nzuve was rushed to Lambert Santé Hospital in Pétion-Ville but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A Dedicated Career in Service

Born on March 8, 1984, in Machakos County, Corporal Kennedy Mutuko Nzuve joined the National Police Service in 2005. He was a member of the elite Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and had served in various challenging assignments across Kenya, including Narok and Baringo counties. He was part of Kenya's 3rd contingent deployed to the MSSM in Haiti, demonstrating a commitment to international peace and security.

Repatriation and Official Condolences

Upon its arrival at JKIA, Corporal Nzuve's body was received by a delegation led by the Commandant of the National Police College Embakasi 'A' Campus, Isaac Alimaa, SAIG, alongside other senior police officers and his family. Following the reception, the body was transferred to Chiromo Mortuary for preservation. The National Police Service issued a statement expressing its 'deepest and most heartfelt condolences' to Nzuve's family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them of 'unwavering support during this period of profound sorrow'. Burial arrangements are expected to be communicated after consultations with the family.

Kenya's Commitment to the Haiti Mission

Kenya deployed its first contingent of officers to Haiti in June 2024 to lead the UN-backed Multinational Security Support Mission, aimed at stabilizing the Caribbean nation amidst escalating gang violence. Corporal Nzuve's death marks the second confirmed casualty of a Kenyan officer in the mission, following the death of Benedict Kabiru, who went missing in March 2025 and was later confirmed deceased. Despite these losses, the NPS reiterated Kenya's dedication to 'achieving the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti in full compliance with international law'.

Two officers gone. Is the government prioritizing lives or politics?

It's truly tragic to lose an officer, and while the mission's intent is good, we must question the adequacy of safety measures for our deployed forces.

While we honour his service, the mention of mechanical problems in a recovery operation raises significant concerns about equipment maintenance and overall operational safety protocols.
