The Brazilian Presidency of
COP30 officially launched
Maloca, a pioneering digital platform, on
September 26, 2025. The initiative is designed to broaden and amplify opportunities for global participation in climate action, ensuring that voices from every region, particularly the
Global South, can help shape the outcomes of future climate conferences.
Democratizing Climate Dialogue
Maloca aims to create an immersive and inclusive space for dialogue, collaboration, and solutions. The platform facilitates interactive virtual environments where governments, civil society, and communities worldwide can convene, share solutions, and participate directly in the global climate process. This expansion of reach extends
COP30 far beyond its physical location in
Belém, Brazil. The launch event took place at the
UN Press Briefing Room in New York.
Key Features and Partnerships
Developed in partnership with the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Maloca serves as a global gateway to
COP30. It is accessible via both a website and a mobile application, available on
Google Play and the
App Store, thereby removing geographical and resource barriers to participation. The platform boasts several advanced features:
- AI-powered translation in seven languages, enabling real-time cross-cultural interaction.
- Capacity to host up to 7,200 events across 20 virtual environments, operating around the clock.
- Functionality for individuals to create avatars and interact with other participants.
Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago,
COP30 President-Designate, announced the opening of Maloca's registration system for virtual events, allowing civil society organizations to apply to host discussions and solution-sharing sessions.
Strategic Objectives for COP30
The launch of Maloca underscores the
Brazilian Presidency's three core priorities for
COP30: strengthening multilateralism, connecting the climate regime to people's real lives, and accelerating the implementation of the
Paris Agreement.
Marcos Neto,
UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of UNDP's Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, highlighted Maloca as a 'transformative step' to engage millions virtually. The platform is part of the 'Route to Belém' initiative, a collaboration between
UNDP in Brazil and the
Secretariat of Climate, Environment, and Energy (Seclima) of the
Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Anticipation for COP30 in Belém
The
30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) is scheduled to take place from
November 10 to 21, 2025, in
Belém, Brazil. Brazil has framed
COP30 as the 'COP of Truth' and an 'implementation COP,' aiming to translate climate ambitions into concrete actions. The introduction of Maloca is expected to foster a new model for inclusive, global climate engagement, signaling that the fight against climate change is a collective effort.

Including more voices is a positive step towards stronger multilateralism, yet the success of Maloca will ultimately depend on the willingness of powerful nations to truly listen and incorporate these diverse perspectives into their strategies.
Stan Marsh
The platform's features like AI translation and numerous virtual events are innovative, but the challenge remains in ensuring that the sheer volume of discussion doesn't dilute the focus on urgent, actionable solutions.
Eric Cartman
This is the kind of innovation we need to accelerate the Paris Agreement. Well done, Brazil!

Maloca offers an exciting opportunity for global engagement, yet the "implementation COP" promise requires more than just a platform; it demands political will and significant financial commitments beyond virtual interaction.

Maloca sounds incredible! Bringing the Global South's voice to the forefront is essential.
