Major Infrastructure Upgrade for Tikehau Airport
The Tikehau Airport terminal extension project has been officially launched in French Polynesia, marking a significant step towards enhancing air travel infrastructure in the region. The initiative, which includes a substantial expansion of the existing terminal, was announced in the presence of state and local authorities, including Jordy CHAN, Minister of Major Works, Equipment, in charge of Air, Land, and Maritime Transport. The project aims to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the popular atoll and improve operational safety and efficiency.
Expanded Terminal and Modern Facilities
The core of the project involves a considerable expansion of the Tikehau Airport terminal. The new facility will be approximately three and a half times larger than the current structure, increasing its surface area from 280 m² to 980 m². The extension will be seamlessly integrated with the existing building, maintaining an identical architectural style featuring a wooden frame and concrete structure. Construction is planned to proceed in phases to ensure continuous airport operations.
In addition to the terminal, the project encompasses other crucial infrastructure developments:
- A new control tower, or 'vigie', will be built with an innovative design inspired by a manta ray. This two-story structure (R+1) will nearly triple the current control tower's surface area, reaching 21 m².
- The installation of runway lighting (balisage lumineux) is a key safety improvement, enabling night operations for the first time. This particular phase of work commenced in late September 2024 and is projected to conclude by June 2025, with an investment of 370 million F CFP. This cost is co-financed by the Country (30%) and the State (70%).
- Free Wi-Fi services will also be deployed within the new terminal, enhancing the passenger experience.
Addressing Growing Demand and Enhancing Safety
The expansion is a direct response to Tikehau's status as a high-traffic destination. The airport, originally built in 1977 with a 1300-meter runway, is the second busiest in the Tuamotu archipelago. It experienced a doubling of its traffic compared to 2019, recording over 1130 commercial aircraft movements in 2023. The increased capacity and modernized facilities are essential to support this growth and the development of local service providers. The call for tenders for the terminal extension is scheduled for October 2024, with construction anticipated to begin in the first half of 2025 and last for two years.

Expensive project for a small atoll. Is this really the best use of public funds?

It's good to see investment in infrastructure to handle the growing visitor numbers, which benefits the economy. However, I'm concerned about how the increased tourism will affect the local culture and traditional way of life in Tikehau.

Increased traffic will only bring more problems, not sustainable solutions.

While the safety upgrades like runway lighting are critical and welcomed, I hope they've thoroughly assessed the long-term ecological impact of such a large expansion on a fragile atoll ecosystem. Sustainable development needs careful planning.

Modernization was long overdue. Passengers will appreciate the new facilities and Wi-Fi.
