High-Level Meeting in New York
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan met with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen of Austria in New York on September 25, 2025. The high-level discussion took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where both leaders were in attendance. The meeting underscored the long-standing and important partnership between the two nations in the European region. The presidents expressed satisfaction with the opportunity to meet and voiced confidence that their talks would facilitate a fruitful exchange of views and identify new avenues for interstate cooperation.
Deepening Economic Partnership
A primary focus of the discussion was the enhancement of the bilateral economic partnership. Both leaders highlighted the successful cooperation between Turkmenistan and Austria, not only bilaterally but also within multilateral frameworks, particularly the United Nations. Austrian companies have been significant suppliers to the Turkmen market, providing essential goods such as transportation equipment, advanced medical technology, and specialized equipment for the chemical and oil and gas industries. The importance of the Turkmen-Austrian Joint Commission was particularly emphasized, serving as a crucial coordinator between state institutions and the private sector to maximize the economic potential of both countries. Future areas for expanded cooperation include digitalization, environmental and medical technologies, energy (especially renewable sources), infrastructure, agriculture, eco-technology, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry.
Turkmenistan's Neutrality Policy and International Cooperation
The presidents also delved into Turkmenistan's neutrality policy, a cornerstone of its foreign relations. Both nations pursue similar foreign policies based on principles of neutrality, which provides a strong foundation for coordinating joint actions on the international stage. Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, recognized by the UN General Assembly since December 12, 1995, is enshrined in its constitution and celebrated nationally. This year, 2025, holds particular significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality and has been proclaimed the 'International Year of Peace and Trust' by the UN, an initiative spearheaded by Turkmenistan. In recognition of this milestone, President Berdimuhamedov extended an invitation to President Van der Bellen to participate in the International Forum for Peace and Trust, scheduled for December 12, 2025, in Ashgabat.
Cultural and Humanitarian Ties
Beyond economic and political discussions, the leaders acknowledged the significant role of cultural and humanitarian ties in strengthening interstate relations. These connections are fostered through various initiatives, including regular performances by Turkmen musicians at festivals in Austria, the establishment of a Turkmen-Austrian symphony orchestra, and the tradition of holding the Vienna Ball in Turkmenistan. These cultural exchanges contribute to mutual understanding and reinforce the friendly relations between the two countries.

Talk of peace and trust, but does it truly reflect regional realities?

While the idea of an 'International Year of Peace and Trust' sounds noble, it's hard to ignore the broader geopolitical landscape and the influence of neighboring powers on such initiatives.
