Roseau, Dominica – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced the appointment of Loik Charles, a young man who is legally blind, as the new Special Assistant for youth and disability affairs within his office. Loik Charles: A Pioneer in Advocacy and Education
Loik Charles has been recognized as a trailblazer in Dominica, overcoming significant challenges associated with his visual impairment. He holds the distinction of being the first blind student to complete mainstream primary education at the Berean Christian Academy, secondary education at St. Mary's Academy, and to graduate from the Dominica State College with an Associate Degree in Information Technology in 2016. Furthermore, Charles was the first blind Dominican to pursue university studies in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. His background includes participation and later training in skills development summer camps organized by Ready Willing Enable Inc., a non-profit supporting youth with disabilities in Dominica.

In his new capacity, Loik Charles will be responsible for addressing and improving matters related to youth and disability. His role will involve bringing attention to issues affecting young people and persons with disabilities directly within the Office of the Prime Minister.
