Production Surpasses Expectations
Norway's combined oil and gas production in August 2025 exceeded official forecasts by 2.6%, according to preliminary figures released by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD). This performance underscores Norway's continued role as a significant energy supplier to Europe.
Oil Output Details
Crude oil production in August reached an average of 1.92 million barrels per day (bpd). This figure surpassed the Directorate's forecast of 1.80 million bpd for the month. Compared to the same period last year, crude oil output saw an increase from 1.78 million bpd in August 2024.
Natural Gas Performance
Natural gas production for August 2025 stood at 332 million cubic metres (mcm) per day. This volume exceeded the official forecast of 328.3 mcm per day by 1.2%. While exceeding forecasts for the month, this represents a slight decrease from the 349 mcm per day recorded in August of the previous year.
Broader Context and Market Role
Overall, the total petroleum production, encompassing oil, condensate, natural gas liquids, and gas, amounted to 0.670 million standard cubic metres per day, equivalent to 4.21 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe/d). This marks a 0.4% increase year-on-year. Norway is recognized as Europe's largest supplier of natural gas and a major producer of oil. The country's production levels can fluctuate monthly due to factors such as maintenance schedules and other operational stoppages across its numerous offshore fields.

This boost in production ensures supply and economic stability, which is clearly positive for consumers and industry. But it also means slower progress towards global climate goals, requiring a delicate balance of priorities.
