Lithuania Enters Armored Vehicle Production with TAURUS 4-1 4x4
Lithuania has marked a significant milestone in its defense industry with the production of its first domestically built Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) armored vehicle, the TAURUS 4-1 4x4. Manufactured by the Lithuanian company Aurida Engineering Company, the vehicle was publicly unveiled in September 2025 at the MSPO defense exhibition in Poland.
The development of the TAURUS 4-1 4x4 stems from a strategic initiative to strengthen Lithuania's defense capabilities 'in these troubled times,' as stated by the company's director. While primarily aimed at national security, Aurida Engineering also eyes the international market, with plans for potential export to NATO and EU countries.
Technical Specifications and Production Details
The 14-ton TAURUS 4-1 4x4 was manufactured at Aurida Engineering's plant in Panevėžys over a period of five months. A substantial portion of its production, including up to 80% of machining, hull manufacturing from armored steel, and final assembly, is carried out within Lithuania, ensuring local content and supply chain reliability.
Key specifications of the TAURUS 4-1 4x4 include:
- Crew Capacity: Designed to carry a crew of 2-3 and up to seven dismounts.
- Engine: Powered by a 6.7-liter Cummins engine capable of producing up to 480 horsepower, paired with a ZF transmission.
- Protection: Meets STANAG 4569 Level 3 ballistic and blast protection standards, capable of withstanding 7.62×51 mm armor-piercing rounds and an 8 kg anti-tank mine blast under a wheel.
- Design Basis: The vehicle's design is based on the proven South African Marauder from Paramount Group, adapted to Lithuanian requirements, including CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) protection.
- Cost: Each unit is priced at over €500,000.
Future Prospects and Market Interest
Aurida Engineering Company has stated its capacity to produce up to 120 vehicles annually and is committed to providing local technical maintenance. The company plans to expand the TAURUS family with additional specialized variants, including 6x6 and 8x8 versions, as well as other 4x4 models featuring enhanced protection or integrated weapon systems.
While foreign countries have reportedly shown interest in the TAURUS 4-1 4x4, domestic demand from the Lithuanian armed forces has been described as lower so far. Despite this, the introduction of the TAURUS 4-1 4x4 signifies Lithuania's growing capabilities in the defense manufacturing sector, complementing other initiatives such as the country's involvement in the regional production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.

Calling it 'domestically produced' when it's based on a foreign design is misleading.

The TAURUS 4-1 demonstrates impressive local engineering capabilities and offers critical protection, yet the half-million euro price tag per unit raises questions about affordability for smaller defense budgets.

This vehicle is a significant symbol of Lithuania's growing defense sector and potential for exports, but securing consistent orders, especially domestically, will be crucial for the project's long-term success and industrial sustainability.
