Female Camel Brutally Tortured in Sukkur, Pakistan, Sparks Widespread Outrage

Incident Shocks Nation

A young female camel, now named Sumi, was subjected to brutal torture in the Saleh Pat area of Sukkur, Sindh province, Pakistan, on Thursday, September 19, 2025. The incident, allegedly carried out by an influential feudal lord and his associates, has ignited widespread public outrage across the country. The camel reportedly wandered into farmland in search of water and allegedly damaged crops, leading to the severe assault.

Details of the Cruelty and Injuries

According to reports, the perpetrators tied the camel to a tractor and dragged it across the field. They then proceeded to beat the animal with sticks, resulting in a broken leg and severe injuries to its face, including a broken jaw and a burnt tongue. The camel's owner, Ghulam Mustafa Shinbhani, initially sought medical help from nearby veterinary staff, who reportedly refused to treat the injured animal.

Official Intervention and Legal Action

The horrific act quickly garnered media attention and public condemnation, prompting Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to take immediate notice. He condemned the cruelty as 'intolerable' and directed officials to ensure the camel received proper medical care. Following the Chief Minister's directives, Sukkur District Council Chairman Syed Kamil Shah oversaw the camel's initial treatment and its urgent transfer to Karachi for specialized care.

Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the Kandhra police station against three nominated suspects under sections 114, 428, 429, 504, and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Two of the suspects, identified as Qurban Brohi and Rasool Bux Sheikh, have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third suspect, Umer Malik.

Camel's Recovery and Broader Context

The injured camel, Sumi, was handed over to the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project for Animal Welfare in Karachi. According to the shelter administration, Sumi's injuries are extensive, including a crushed leg, broken jaw, burnt tongue, and other serious body wounds. She is currently receiving intravenous fluids and is scheduled for surgery on her leg.

This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case in June 2024 in Sanghar, where another camel named Cammie had its leg severed under similar circumstances. Cammie was also rescued by the CDRS Benji Project and later received a prosthetic leg from a US-based firm, allowing her to walk again. Animal rights activists and officials continue to call for stricter animal protection laws in Pakistan to prevent such acts of cruelty.

This punishment seems excessive for property damage.

Focus on human suffering first. This is a distraction.

While the cruelty is undeniable and sickening, we also need to address the underlying issues of poverty and land disputes that might lead to such desperate acts.

Feudal lords will always get away with it. Laws mean nothing.
