Nigerian Police Urge Stronger Media Collaboration for National Security and Public Trust

Police Seek Media Partnership in Abuja

CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has called for a more robust collaboration between the police and media organizations across Nigeria. The appeal was made during his visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council in Abuja on September 20, 2025. Hundeyin underscored the critical role of the media in enhancing national security and fostering public trust in law enforcement.

During his engagement, Hundeyin highlighted that his responsibilities as the police spokesperson would be significantly challenging without the unwavering support of the press. He stated, 'I cannot succeed in this role without the collaboration of the press.'

Importance of Balanced Reportage and Public Trust

The FPRO stressed the necessity of balanced reportage, warning that negative stories could severely damage public confidence in the police. He explained that effective policing relies heavily on information and tips from the public, which tend to diminish when trust is eroded. 'Policing relies heavily on information. Officers can't be everywhere at once, which is why people's tips and shared intelligence are so important. But when the public loses trust in us, those vital sources of information dry up, and that puts everyone at risk,' Hundeyin remarked.

He reiterated the NPF's commitment to protecting lives and property and appealed to the media to assist in building trust through open communication and partnership, aiming to strengthen both the police force and the nation.

NUJ's Response and Commitment

In response to Hundeyin's call, Comrade Grace Ike, the NUJ FCT Chairman, welcomed the FPRO and expressed the council's readiness to work closely with the police. She acknowledged the police's efforts to connect directly with the media, viewing it as a sign of commitment to open dialogue and better understanding.

Comrade Ike also affirmed the NUJ FCT's stance against any form of harassment or intimidation of journalists, emphasizing that press freedom is a fundamental right. She noted that while journalists recognize the police's role in maintaining peace and upholding the law, the public requires timely, accurate, and honest information to have confidence in security agencies, making trust and cooperation paramount in their relationship.

Broader Context of Police-Media Relations

This call for collaboration comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to redefine its community relations and improve public perception. Studies have indicated a general lack of public confidence and trust in the Nigerian police, often stemming from concerns about effectiveness, alleged brutality, and corruption.

The NPF has previously implemented measures such as a Social Media Policy to regulate officers' digital conduct, enhance professionalism, and combat misinformation. Hundeyin's recent familiarization tour, which also included a visit to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Headquarters on September 16, 2025, signals a proactive approach to media engagement and transparency aimed at rebuilding public trust and ensuring accurate dissemination of police activities.

Acknowledging the NUJ's commitment to press freedom is important, as journalists need to operate without intimidation. This partnership could be beneficial if it leads to greater police transparency, rather than just managed narratives.

Positive step forward. Media's role in national security is often underestimated.

While police-media collaboration is vital for national security, the police must also address internal issues of brutality and corruption to genuinely earn public trust. Without real reform, media efforts alone won't suffice.
