ABVP Sweeps Key Posts in Delhi University Student Elections
The results of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections for 2025 were declared on Friday, September 19, 2025, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) emerging as the dominant force. The student wing affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) secured three out of the four central panel posts, including the coveted president's position. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), backed by the Congress, managed to win one seat, that of the Vice President.
Key Winners and Vote Margins
The fiercely contested elections saw significant margins for the winning candidates:
- President: Aryan Maan (ABVP) won the presidential post with 28,841 votes, defeating NSUI's Joslyn Nandita Choudhary by a substantial margin of 16,196 votes. Maan, a graduate of Hansraj College and currently pursuing an MA in Library Science, has been actively involved in ABVP-led student movements.
- Vice President: Rahul Jhansla (NSUI) secured the Vice President's position with 29,339 votes. He triumphed over ABVP's Govind Tanwar by a margin exceeding 8,700 votes.
- Secretary: Kunal Chaudhary (ABVP) was elected Secretary, polling 23,779 votes. He defeated NSUI's Kabir. Chaudhary, a PGDAV graduate, previously served as president of the PGDAV College Students' Union.
- Joint Secretary: Deepika Jha (ABVP) claimed the Joint Secretary post with 21,825 votes, overcoming NSUI's Lavkush Bhadana.
Voter Turnout and Election Process
Polling for the DUSU elections took place on Thursday, September 18, 2025, across 195 booths at 52 polling stations. The elections recorded a voter turnout of 39.36%, with 60,272 students casting their ballots out of approximately 1.53 lakh registered voters. This marked a slight increase from the previous year's turnout. The counting of votes, which began on Friday morning at the Convention Centre in North Campus, concluded after 21 rounds of meticulous tallying. Other student organizations, including the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students' Association (AISA), also contested but did not secure any central panel posts.
Significance of the Outcome
The results underscore ABVP's continued stronghold and influence within Delhi University's student politics, reclaiming the president's post after NSUI had won it in 2024. The outcome is often seen as a reflection of the broader political landscape in India, with national parties investing heavily in these student elections. The newly elected DUSU office-bearers are expected to address student-centric issues, with President Aryan Maan having pledged to push for concessional metro passes for students.

Disappointed with the results. Where's the real student representation?

ABVP's strong showing indicates a clear preference among voting students, yet the overall low turnout suggests many feel unrepresented by any party.

The elections demonstrate a vibrant democratic process on campus, even if the outcomes often mirror broader political trends. It's crucial that the new office-bearers focus solely on student welfare.

While it's good to see a clear mandate for the winning party, the heavy influence of national political affiliations in DUSU elections is a bit worrying for independent student voices.

Another year, same political drama. Student issues ignored.
