Taqa Transmission Awards 400kV Line Contract to ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC for Abu Dhabi Grid Upgrades

Major Contract Awarded for Abu Dhabi's Power Grid

Abu Dhabi Transmission Company (TAQA Transmission), a subsidiary of the state-owned utility Taqa, has awarded a significant contract to ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC T&D for the construction of a new 400kV overhead transmission line. This development marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to upgrade and modernize Abu Dhabi's electricity grid. The project is specifically linked to the ADNOC Ruwais LNG development, underscoring its strategic importance for the emirate's energy infrastructure.

Project Scope and Timeline

The contract awarded to ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC T&D encompasses a comprehensive scope of work. This includes the full design, supply, and installation of a 400kV Line In, Line Out (LILO) and conductor uprating works, extending over a distance of 53.8 kilometers. Additionally, the project will involve the deployment of high-capacity 132kV overhead line circuits and three underground cable circuits. The entire project is slated for completion within a 30-month timeframe.

Enhancing Abu Dhabi's Energy Infrastructure

This latest contract is part of Taqa's broader strategy to invest in and enhance Abu Dhabi's transmission technology. The company's combined investment in various grid-related projects is projected to reach approximately AED 36 billion. Taqa Transmission plays a pivotal role in integrating new power generation sources into the UAE's grid, including substantial renewable energy projects such as a 5.2 gigawatt (GW) solar plant and a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery storage system, as well as the Al Dhafra Thermal plant. These initiatives are designed to support the UAE's energy transition and its ambitious AI Strategy for 2031.

Taqa Transmission's Commitment to Sustainable Growth

As the largest transmission asset owner in the United Arab Emirates, Taqa Transmission is responsible for connecting power and water supply to demand, ensuring efficient and reliable delivery across the emirate. The company has a proven track record of integrating critical infrastructure, including the connection of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant to the grid with nearly 1,000 kilometers of 400 kV overhead lines in 2020, and the successful integration of the Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Plant. These efforts highlight Taqa's commitment to enabling decarbonization and meeting the growing energy demands of consumers, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global energy transition.

The strategic importance of this project is clear, supporting both economic development and energy security. However, ensuring local job creation and skill transfer should be a higher priority in these contracts.

Another massive expenditure on infrastructure. When will we see the actual benefits translated to lower costs for consumers?

More overhead lines? This will just add to visual pollution and potential land disputes. Not a fan.

While upgrading the grid is necessary for reliability, the environmental impact of 53.8 km of new overhead lines and associated infrastructure needs careful scrutiny.
