A Sikh woman, who reported being raped in what she described as a racially motivated attack, has expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received. The incident occurred in the Tame Road area of Oldbury, West Midlands, on Tuesday. The victim, believed to be in her twenties, reported that a racist remark was made during the sexual assault.
The Sikh Federation UK reported that the perpetrators allegedly told the woman, "You don’t belong in this country, get out." West Midlands Police have detained a man in connection with the attack and are continuing their investigation. The police had previously stated they were seeking two white men in connection with the incident.
The attack has sparked concerns within the Sikh community regarding the current political climate in the UK, which they believe fosters racism. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, issued a statement through Sikh Youth UK, expressing her thanks for the "love and support" she has received.
In her statement, she acknowledged the difficult time she is experiencing and expressed her appreciation for the kindness shown by the community. She stated that she was simply going to work when the attack occurred, and that it has deeply affected her. She also noted that the police are working diligently to find those responsible.
The woman specifically thanked her family, Sikh Youth UK, local Gurdwara committees, Sikh organizations, and the wider community for their support. She emphasized that she is deeply grateful for their help in getting through this difficult time.
Dabinderjit Singh, the lead executive for political engagement at the Sikh Federation UK, noted that the attack took place in broad daylight on a busy road. Sikh Youth UK is providing support to the victim and her family.
Following the attack, an emergency meeting was held at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara temple nearby, where community members expressed their concerns about safety. Mr. Singh emphasized the need for politicians from all parties to have zero tolerance for violent racist attacks. He attributed the current racist political environment to populism and politicians exploiting anti-immigration sentiments.
Gurinder Singh Josan, the Labour MP for Smethwick, confirmed that the attack is being treated as a hate crime. He stated that he has spoken with the Borough Commander and is assured that the police are doing everything possible to find the perpetrators. The police are working sympathetically with the victim, who has been traumatized by the attack.

The police should be commended for their quick action. The perpetrators need to be brought to justice and charged appropriately.

This incident is a brutal reminder of the reality of racism. Let's provide our support to the victim and condemn this awful act.

Why is this being labeled a hate crime already? Premature to say the least. We need evidence.

The Sikh Federation loves to play the victim card. Always quick to point fingers at 'populism.'
